How your A/C System works

At ambient temperatures a/c refrigerant is a gas.  Years ago cars used r-12, commonly know as Freon.   They stopped using r-12 because it eroded the ozone layer in the atmosphere.  Freon has been replaced by r-22, also known as Suva.
When you turn on the a/c system, through a relay, and sensors the compressor clutch “Locks up” and the a/c compressor turns.   Suva enters the compressor as a gas, and comes out as a high temperature liquid.  By compressing the gas into a liquid the temperature goes up to around 250 degrees Fahrenheit.  The liquid leaves the compressor, travels through an aluminum line and goes through a “Condenser.”   The condenser looks like, and acts exactly like a radiator.  Outside air goes through the condenser and cools the refrigerant inside the condenser.  The refrigerant exits the condenser as a liquid and close to ambient temperature.
The cool liquid refrigerant travels through another aluminum pipe, through an expansion valve, into the evaporator.  The expansion valve allows the liquid to ‘expand’ and become a gas.   When the liquid refrigerant expands and becomes a gas, its temperature decreases to just above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
The evaporator is another radiator.  It looks like a radiator, but is much smaller, and it is generally located behind/near the glove box.  The refrigerant enters the evaporator at around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, cooling the evaporator.  When you turn the a/c on the fan blows air across the fins of the evaporator cooling this air; hence you get cool air.  The hot air blowing across the evaporator heats the refrigerant in the evaporator.  Radiators/evaporators are also known as heat exchangers.  The air blowing across the evaporator is cooled, and the refrigerant inside the evaporator is warmed; hence heat is exchanged.
Hot air contains a lot of moisture.  As the evaporator cools this moist air, water condenses out, and is drained under the car.  When the a/c is on, and you are standing still, you will see a small puddle of water under your car.
If the refrigerant was below 32 degrees the water would freeze onto the evaporator, restrict air flow through it, and you would get diminished cooling.
If the drain in the evaporator gets clogged, the condensed water drains inside the car, and the carpeting on the front passenger seat gets very wet.  This is generally fixed by using a coat hanger to unclog the drain.
The refrigerant leaves the evaporator as a warm gas.  Through another aluminum pipe the refrigerant travels to an accumulator/dryer.  A dryer is used since water combined with refrigerant creates hydrochloric acid. Obviously acid is undesirable to the system.
Through the last aluminum tube the refrigerant (still a gas) leaves the accumulator/dryer and goes back to the a/c compressor completing the a/c cycle.
A/C Compressor:
The front of the compressor has a clutch, and the clutch is turned by a belt.  When the a/c is off, the clutch turns, but the a/c compressor doesn’t turn.  When the a/c is turned on, an electrical current goes to the clutch, locking it up to the compressor so that the compressor turns.

High Pressure Sensor
This sensor is located between the a/c condenser and the evaporator.  Here the refrigerant is a high pressure liquid.  If the pressure exceeds the manufacturer’s maximum allowable pressure, the senor “Opens” and stops the flow of electricity to the a/c clutch.  When this sensor “Opens” the a/c clutch Is de-energized and the a/c compressor stops turning; hence the pressure goes down.  This is a safety device which prevents the system from “blowing up.”

Low Pressure Sensor:
This sensor is located between the evaporator and the a/c compressor.  If the pressure is too low, it “Opens” and stops the flow of electricity to the a/c clutch.  When this happens the a/c compressor stops turning.  This is a safety device which prevents the compressor from turning when there is not enough refrigerant/oil in the system to properly lubricate the compressor.

Aluminum Lines:
Aluminum lines have one problem… Aluminum parts sometimes corrode together.  If they did not corrode together, life is good and then they easily come apart.  However; if the aluminum parts corrode together they cannot be normally separated, and I need to replace both parts.

For example, I had a Honda with a hole in the aluminum line between the condenser and the compressor.  The aluminum line corroded together with the condenser.  When I removed the line from the condenser, there where no threads left in the condenser to use to reconnect a new aluminum line.  I need to replace the condenser.  In this case an inexpensive repair became a very expensive repair.  Unfortunately I cannot tell ahead of time if the parts have corroded together or not corroded together.

Your a/c system is unique in that it never needs maintenance.  It is a closes system that continually recycles the refrigerant and the oil.  Oil is used to lubricate the a/c compressor.  Without this oil the compressor would seize-up.

A/C System

A/C system
Your a/c system is self contained and does not need maintenance.  If the air comes out cold, you are done, and you don’t have to worry about this system.  If the air comes our cool, or warm there are two possible problems with the system.

Why Doesn’t My A/C Work?
First possibility: The system may not have enough a/c refrigerant to enable a/c compressor to engage.  Under the best of circumstances an a/c system slowly loose its refrigerant.  It takes somewhere around 7 years for a perfectly good a/c system to leak enough refrigerant such that the compressor will not start when you try to get cold air.  The oil which lubricates the a/c compressor floats in the refrigerant.  As the refrigerant leaks out, the oil leaks out.  If the compressor engaged when there was inadequate amount of refrigerant, the compressor would not be properly lubricated, and it would seize-up.  To prevent this from happening, a pressure sensor prevents the a/c compressor from running when you are low on refrigerant.

On a side note, to keep the compressor lubricated in the winter, the computer turns the compressor on and off.

Also, when you turn on the “defrost,” the a/c system automatically turns on.  The air first goes through the a/c coils in order to “dry-out” the air, and then the air is heated by the heating coils so that it can evaporate the condensation on the windshield.

Second possibility:  The system is full of refrigerant, but due to an electrical problem, the a/c compressor does not turn on.   For example, you could have a bad button (on the dash), bad relay, bad fuse, bad wire, or a bad sensor.

How Do I Diagnose a “Non-Operating A/C System?
I start by connecting my A/C gauges to your car.  If the lower pressure gauge indicates good pressure (oddly enough good pressure in ‘psi’ is equal to room temperature) then the car is full of refrigerant.  If I read good pressure but the a/c compressor does not engage, I know you have an electrical problem.

If the gauges indicate you don’t have any refrigerant, or a very low quantity of refrigerant then I add refrigerant and yellow dyed oil.  If the compressor engages, then I know the electrical system is good, and the system did not work because of “Low refrigerant.”  After I fill the system, I look for a refrigerant leak.  Looking through tinted yellow glasses I can see refrigerant leaking from your system.  Unfortunately, this only allows me to see “Big” leaks.

A small leak takes 3 days to two weeks for the system to loose enough refrigerant such that the a/c compressor no longer engages.  Within days of the A/C no longer working, you need to bring your car back here so I can use my geeky yellow glasses to find the oil leaked.  The oil leaked at the same spot where the refrigerant leaked. Once I see which part leaked, I can give you a price to replace that part.

Why Do I Have to Refill MY A/C System Once a Year?
You may have a seal around the a/c compressor which shrinks when the temperature gets cold (winter) and allows the refrigerant to leak out.  When it is warm outside (summer) the seal expands and no longer allows the refrigerant to leak.  You fix this by replacing the a/c compressor, or you refill the system every summer.

Why Shouldn’t I Refill the A/C System in the Winter?
If you wait weeks before bringing your car back, the yellow dye with disappear and I will not know form where the refrigerant leaked.  It is for this reason that I hesitate refilling the a/c system in the late fall, winter, or early spring.  If it refill the system, and you don’t use it for a month, the refrigerant may have leaked out and you didn’t know it since you did not use it.  Months go by before you realize the a/c leaked, and by then I cannot see any trace of the yellow oil.

What is the most hp I can get from a 350 with a TBI system

Question:
I have a 1993 Chevrolet caprice 5.7. What is the most hp I can get from a 350 with a TBI system. i have been told 535 hp and 500ftlb of torque is this true? I am trying to build a car that is street-able and pushes out upward of 700hp. I have turned the 350 into a 383 stroker what else could I do?

Answer:

The Answer is easy. Bolt on a Nitrous Kit or a turbo. I would go with the Nitrous. You can add a 150 hp on stock pistons and 200 hp on forged pistons, depending on what you have already in your Stroker.

How much transmission fluid goes in a 2005 Sonata

Question:

I have a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. I just need to know what to do to change the transmission oil and how much does it need?

Answer:

The total capacity is 8.5 qts. Simply draining the pan does not get all fluid out of system, so drain and fill capacity is usually about 3-4 qts. Remove the drain plug, drain the fluid, note amount drained out, and take care to check level frequently when filling so not to overfill.
Hyundai recommends using only Hyundai SP111 trans fluid.

How to troubleshoot my air conditioning?

There are many different ways to go about troubleshooting your car air conditioning system. The best approach is to determine if it is a mechanical failure or electrical failure. Then diagnose the the problem in that manner. For example: If the air conditioning compressor clutch is not engaging it could be caused by no freon, or low freon charge which would be a mechanical failure. Also it could be caused by an electrical problem and no power is getting to the compressor. In order to diagnose the problem follow these steps: Troubleshooting your Air Conditioning System Step by Step

Gas Mileage Lower than Normal?

Today’s engine management systems rely on many different sensor inputs to regulate fuel economy, performance and emissions.

Symptom: Poor Fuel Economy

Probable Causes: Fuel Rich Codes (P0172 and/or P0175)

With the price of gasoline, you don’t want to ignore this kind of problem for long. When fuel economy is down, you may find any number of codes:
• P0172 and/or P0175 are rich codes, and indicate a general rich air/fuel condition. The underlying cause may be anything that increases fuel delivery, such as excessive fuel pressure, a defective fuel pressure regulator, plugged return line, or leaky injectors. Decreased airflow from a dirty air filter or restricted air intake misleads the mass airflow sensor or engine management system into believing the engine is using more air or is under more load than actual.

started loosing overdrive, then drive and when we came to a stop

I just put a motor and automatic trans that has 46,000 miles on it in my sons 2003 kia rio. It runs good and was shifting fine but after a few miles we started loosing overdrive, then drive and when we came to a stop and took off again it wouldn't come out of 2nd. We had trouble with the plug on the newer trans that slips over the rod on top of the trans that connects to your shifter inside. It looks like some sort of sensor switch. It wouldn't stay connected when plugged into the wiring harness and kept the car from cranking and seemed to affect the shifting. We switched it with a used one and worked fine at first but then went back to the shifting problem. Does it sound like a tranny problem or is this piece we switched a sensor that affects when the gears change and needs to be replaced with a new one. The guy we got the motor and trans from is pretty trust worthy and will switch the trans out if its a problem.

Code P0720, P0731, P1790,P0700

Customer Problem:

I have a 1999 Chrysler 300M with a 3.5L engine. My Check Engine light came on and at the same time I lost my dash gauges and it will not shift out of first gear.

Solution:

Computer Diagnostics done to extract the codes for the check engine light. The coeds were:

P0720 = Output shaft speed sensor error

P0731 = First gear incorrect ratio

P1790 = Fault immediately after shift

P0700 = Transmission fault code

Since this situation all happened at once it would make sense that they are related. After removing and testing the Output shaft sensor that is supposed to be at 800 ohms, and was showing completely open, the Output shaft sensor was proven to have failed. Replaced the Output Shaft Sensor ( $20.00 ) and cleared the codes. Test drove the vehicle and all is working normal. Customer happy.

2005 Toyota Tundra SR5 Estimate for Repairs

rack and pinion assembly, Rack Mount Bushings, Left & Right outer tie rod, and Left & Right upper control arm bushings. I need an estimate please.

I would definitely like to know how long each should take and if any of the time gets cut out because of another part of the repair. Just wanting to know if I'm getting hosed. (we are in the military and are over seas and we are told to be careful of the locals over charging us Thanks!)

Response:

rack and pinion assembly, Rack Mount Bushings, Left & Right outer tie rod, and Left & Right upper control arm bushings

I would definitely like to know how long each should take and if any of the time gets cut out because of another part of the repair.

The cost of replacing the Steering Rack is aout $1200.00 including both outer tie rod ends. Tie rod ends by them selves would be about $250- $300. The control arm bushings run about $145.00 per side so about $290 for both. So the entire service would run about $1490.00 Plus (shop add ons) plus tax. Some shops do not have ad ons, but most do... like shop supplies, etc. Be sure to ask up front so you are not supprised.

Reply:

Thanks! Actually, come to find out they were trying to screw us. Went to another shop and it was only the tie rod bushing (i think that's what he called it). It was a thick gasket looking thing in the center of the tie rods and it was just starting to get a little worn so there was very slight play. Cost us $132 for the repair, part, and an alignment. Thanks for the info anyways, but I'm Glad I didn't need it!

I have a 2000 Ford Escort which stutters intermittently

Question:

I have a 2000 Ford Escort which stutters intermittently, as if the gas flow to the engine is being interrupted. Sometimes, not all the time, I can smell gas for a short period after starting the car. Usually, after the engine has warmed up the stuttering will diminish. A few weeks after the problem began, the engine emissions light came on. Have not yet taken it to a mechanic, fearing the potential cost. Have spoken to a friend who is a mechanic in another state who said the problem could be as simple as an airflow valve--I believe thats what he called it--to something more serious involving the car''s emission controls. Would appreciate any advice.

Answer:

It sounds to me like you may need to have a tune up at the very least and the coil assembly replaced (common failure part) In order for you to smell gas, this would mean the engine is not burning it or you would smell exhaust as usual. So one of the cylinders is not getting good spark at all times. And since it is not burning the gas properly it is kicking on the check engine light. If you live near an AutoZone, they will check your codes for FREE!!
Repair cost should be less than $200.00 parts and labor.

I need the IMRC - Code P1358

Question:

I need the IMRC for a 1998 Lincoln continental and Ford says I need an IMRC. And Ford says they don't make the part anymore. What should I do?

Answer:

IMRC- INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL

Generally the hose is what breaks. Watch the video (follow link) below for a great explanation. This is a different vehicle but still applies to your issue.
Example Video of explanation
the pipe color is blue, this can be seen (on my engine) on the left hand side of the manifold below the primary battery fuse box, towards the back. it can be pulled off. the pipe (blue) shares its rubber boot with another pipe. the way I checked to see if i could open the manifold flaps (rails) was to put a plastic drinking straw into the rubber boot leading to the blue pipe and suck on it. Doing this I could hear the flaps snap shut when i stopped sucking( all this without the engine running). If you can hear them moving then there is a problem with no vacuum. If they do not move then it will be a big strip down, lower manifold off to get to them. Sometimes they build up carbon and stick and just need to be cleaned.
If you actually need the part, you are looking at contacting salvage yards in your area.

Used Car Review - Volkswagen New Beetle (2000-2006)

Before summer ends, Myk Belmonte features a funky car to conclude the season.

2000-2006 Volkswagen New Beetle

History
We all know that the Beetle body and name is very classic. So classic that during the North American International Auto Show which happened in 1994, Volkswagen presented the "Concept One" which has some resemblance to the old Beetle. With public reaction very high, a production model was necessitated with production starting in October 1997.

Utilizing the Mk4 Golf's platform, the New Beetle was just a Beetle in looks and badge but everything else were taken from the popular hatchback. Good thing this one carried modern conveniences that we will tackle on the later portions of this article. 14 years later, the New Beetle was redesigned and sold as the plain "Beetle".

Auto Prominence Corporation revamped the Volkswagen line-up in 2000, which placed the Polo Classic to the graveyard and brought in new models such as the New Beetle, Passat, and Bora. As always, the New Beetle was the star but the price killed potential customers, especially that who would be thinking of buying a million peso car which can only seat two. Woes of the distributor made the Volkswagen brand (as a whole) to be pulled out in 2006. While the coupe was made available first, a convertible was later on added in 2004.

Value and Costs
There is no need to complain on the Beetle's stratospheric price, especially that a second hand unit will set you back between P400,000-P700,000 which is a mix of local and imported units. With minimal changes that happened, focusing on the vehicle condition is the prudent choice.

Solid as it is, this vehicle is notoriously included in the lists of vehicles with worst reliability, which makes it an alarm of concern. With that, check the vehicle thoroughly and prepare adequate funds especially you wouldn't want to frown when this car coinks out.

Exterior and Interior
The looks may be reminiscent of its grandfather but rather than placing the engine at the rear, luggages are invited to be stowed there. Anything else, we shall let the car's styling speak for itself.

Inside, only two people can join in the fun in a comfortable fashion especially the rear portion is best left empty or for packages only. Novelty pieces include the small tachometer and the famed flower vase inside which complements the clean and clutter-free dashboard.

Engine
When it was first launched, the APK 1,984cc carrying 114hp at 5,200rpm and 170Nm at 2,400rpm is the sole option for the early models and can be had with the convertible model. Three years later, a basic AWH 1,595cc having 100hp at 5,600rpm and 145Nm at 3,800rpm was launched for the hatchback models. There is no need to go for the larger engine especially their performance aren't far in between plus going low gives you less maintenance expenses.

Driving Impressions
Classic Beetle looks with modern day conveniences, driving this one does not need any adjustments especially if you are used from something modern. Acceleration is just average, not too fast but definitely not slow plus visibility is excellent.

Verdict
So, are you contemplating on buying this because you are a Beetlemaniac or of overall practicality? If you are going to use this one on a daily basis, other sub-compacts that offer more fun and practicality are better options. Unless you want Volkswagens, we wouldn't stop you and we'll say, have fun in hunting!

When it runs hot, it will not go in reverse

Question:
I have a 1983 Ford Econoline box truck with a 351. I have changed the water pump, spark plugs, oil change, thermostat and exhaust system. The muffler pipe was turning orange before I changed it. But the engine is still running hot. When it runs hot, it will not go in reverse. Could you tell me what else I could do about it running hot?
Already Tried: water pump, spark plugs, oil change, radiator flush, changed exhaust system

Answer:
1) Have your ignition timing set/adjusted (should make a huge difference) Excessive ignition timing will cause an engine to run hot and can make the exhaust glow red/orange
2) Check/Replace the clutch on the clutch fan(common) or install an electric fan

Nissan says cheaper U.S. Leaf price due to tax, incentive gaps

Nissan Motor Co., aiming to be the biggest seller of electric cars, said a lower U.S. price for its Leaf hatchback compared with Japan and Europe reflects differences in local taxes and incentives and that the vehicle will eventually make money in all markets.

Nissan said this week its battery-powered Leaf will cost about $37,000 in Europe after incentives. That compares with $32,780 in the U.S. before incentives and a base price in Japan of more than $40,000. Variations in import fees, taxes and incentives account for the disparities, said Tom Smith, Nissan's chief marketing manager for European electric auto sales.

“If you just translate the U.S. price into euros, you seem to get a significant difference,” Smith said in a phone interview from Nissan's headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. Excluding Europe's higher tax on the vehicle and an import duty that's four times that in the U.S., “we are priced at exactly the same level in both markets,” he said.

The Leaf, powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, will go on sale in Japan and the U.S. this year and in Europe next year. Nissan's CEOCarlos Ghosn has set a goal of leading sales of rechargeable vehicles, which he estimates may make up 10 percent of global auto demand by 2020.

While competitors Toyota Motor Corp., General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. are preparing to sell battery-powered and plug-in hybrid models, none has announced plans matching Nissan's goal of being able to sell as many as 500,000 electric cars by 2012.

Too low?

Nissan aims for the Leaf to compete in price with Toyota's gasoline-electric Prius and Honda Motor Co.'s Civic Hybrid in the U.S. The vehicle qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit and may get an added $5,000 rebate in California, where large automakers are required to sell electric vehicles.

Based on cost estimates for Leaf's battery pack, electronic components and production, the U.S. price seems too low, at least initially, said John Kluza, a battery analyst at Lux Research in Boston.

The current cost of the 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack, capable of propelling the Leaf as far as 100 miles (160 kilometers), may be about $20,000, Kluza said. Nissan has declined to provide cost details.

“It seems the goal was to price Leaf to get sales volume even if there's some initial loss,” Kluza said. “In the first year or so, perhaps they'll take a hit of $2,000 on each car, maybe more. Over time, as battery production scales up, that price will start to look more appropriate.”

‘All the information'

The U.S. price excludes local sales taxes, which vary across the country, and a destination and handling charge of about $800, according to Jung.

Takeshi Miyao, a Tokyo-based analyst for consulting company Carnorama, estimates battery-pack and component costs for the Leaf are about 2.45 million yen ($26,900), excluding labor and other expenses.

Analysts such as Kluza and Miyao “don't have all the information,” said Nissan's Trisha Jung, chief marketing manager for U.S. electric vehicle sales, who oversaw local pricing for the model. “We are the first affordable, mass- market electric vehicle. We're pricing appropriately to ensure that.”

Nissan is factoring into the price the longer-term impact of state and U.S. federal incentives it won to produce the Leaf at its Smyrna, Tennessee, plant and build a lithium-ion battery factory next to it, said KG Duleep, who researches advanced auto technologies for consultant ICF International. Those incentives included a $1.6 billion low-cost federal loan won in 2009.

Advance orders

“When automakers price, they build in all aspects of capital costs over a multi-year period, and Nissan is getting a substantial amount of assistance,” said Duleep, who is based in Washington. “There's probably some loss on the first few thousand cars, but perhaps by 2013 or so their costs might be at or below $30,000 a vehicle.”

It took Toyota at least 10 years to make a profit on its Prius, which was introduced in 1997, when research, development and capital costs are included, said Koji Endo, managing director at Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo. It may take Nissan about the same amount of time, he estimated.

For a new car powered by a conventional gasoline engine, it usually takes about four years to make a profit, he said.

Nissan has a goal of 20,000 advance orders for the Leaf, which is set to begin arriving in the U.S. late this year. The company will mark the start of construction of its U.S. battery plant in Smyrna on May 26. The facility, to open in 2012, will have capacity to make lithium-ion battery packs for as many as 200,000 vehicles annually.

Starter finally went out. Got the dreaded click when ignition key turned

I have a 1996 Chevy suburban. Starter finally went out. Got the dreaded click when ignition key turned. New starter put in with no problems. Connected the positive lead then when I went to connect the negative lead it sparks and you hear the starter try to engage. no key in the ignition switch. Stater checked out fine again after I took it back to have it checked. pulled the starter relay and it still did the same thing. any ideas?

Answer:

You've got wires crossed, on wrong posts, or touching. the main wire on the starter cannot touch the smaller wires on the solenoid.

Now the car is at home and won't start

Question:
My girlfriend has a 1999 Pontiac Grand-am, the upper radiator hose went on it. We had it towed to a garage and repaired. Now the car is at home and won''t start. How do I reset the security system, or disable it. Already Tried: Locking and unlocking the doors!

Answer:
Disconnect the battery. Insert the correct ignition key and turn the key to the "ON" position (not start). Then with the key left in the "ON" position, connect the battery. It is now reset. If you turn the key to start and nothing happens, it is not from the security system. The security system just turns off the fuel, so the engine would still crank over.

If it is not cranking over. You will need to make sure you have a good battery (out of a car that does start) Just because the radio and lights work, does not mean it has enough juice to turn over the starter.

Is there a difference between regular and premium gas?

Question:
I was wondering if there is a difference between regular and premium gas...b/c if you think about it...some gas stations only have one pump with 3 selections of gas...wouldn't u think it comes from the same pipe. and when the gas truck comes he fills up the main storage tank and u don't see 3 sections on the gas truck that has 1 section for regular, one section for medium grade..and one section for premium....and i guess the truck comes once a week to fill up their storage tank...so what do you guys think??

Answer:

There is a misconception in the world that high octane fuel will make your car go faster or run better. This is not true. The octane rating only rates the fuel’s resistance to engine knocking.

Knocking or pinging is a sound that an engine makes when the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chambers ignites too early. (Also known as predetination). Although slight knocking or pinging won’t damage your engine, loud knocking can cause damage and should not be allowed to continue. It can actually burn a hole right through the piston over time. The solution is to use a high octane fuel, which is actually more difficult to ignite, despite the misconception that high octane fuel is more powerful. When the fuel is more difficult to burn, early ignition is eliminated, and with it the knocking or pinging.

The octane level required by an engine is determined by its compression ratio: higher-compression engines require higher-octane fuel. For example, a basic sedan generally only requires the standard octane fuel offered at gas stations, while a high-performance sports car or race car may require a high octane fuel. The owner’s manual lists information on the type of fuel you should use in your car. The reason behind this , the more advanced the engine timing can be, the more power the engine can produce. In most engines today the timing is controlled by the computer that receives a signal from a knock sensor. The engine will only advance the engine timing up to the point of knocking. So if you raise this point with higher octane, then the computer will allow the engine timing to advance further than using lower octane thus delivering more power.

Gas stations typically offer three different octane levels of fuel: regular, mid-grade, and premium. The regular grade generally has the octane level required by most cars, and mid-grade and premium are each a step up. Then, of course, there is the super high octane fuel available at race tracks, which is designed for the extremely high compression ratios that race car engines have. Pretty much all of the fuel grades commercially available have cleaning additives in them, so you need not choose a high octane fuel with the idea that it will clean your engine better.

You can run low octane fuel in cars that are 1996 and newer but you will not receive the expected fuel mileage as you would get with higher octane fuel. And if your car has a higher compression ratio you can cause damage to the engine no matter the year of the vehicle.

Windshield wipers to stop on my 1995 Honda Accord

Question:
I can't get my windshield wipers to stop on my 1995 Honda Accord. I just leave the fuse out when I don't need to use them.
Already Tried: Replaced switch on column

Answer:
There is an article in the '00 July issue of Honda Service News about the wipers coming on key on: Unplug the Intermittent Wiper Relay below the under-hood fuse/relay box and see if the wipers stop. If so, wiggle the intermittent wiper relay and replace the relay if it rattles. Check if the intermittent relay clicks as it is unplugged. If yes, either the Green/Red wire is shorted to ground or the integrated control unit is holding it to ground and will need replaced.

data link communication system port is not working ...

Question:
My data link communication system port is not working in my 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup. I bought a code reader from Harbor Freight, and it didn''t pick up any codes, but did on my wife's car. Took the reader back, and went to Auto Zone. They offered to read the codes, but their reader wouldn't work either.

Answer:
You will want to check the radio and cigar lighter fuse. If they are blown, it will not receive a signal through the data connector.

where is the camshaft position sensor located on my gm engine? It's a 1997 3100 engine (6 cylinder) I ran a diagnostics and it came out code P0341 which is the camshaft position sensor. I was thinking of replacing the sensor and see if the problem goes away. The problem is that the engine looses power at higher RPMs. This code fault is the only one in the computer. I do not know the physical location of this sensor to replace it. Can you describe exactly where it is on my engine?
Answer:
It should be located right below the back of the power steering pump on the lower intake manifold.

Tesla to make EVs with Toyota, buy NUMMI

Toyota Motor Corp. and Tesla Motors Inc. will become partners to produce electric vehicles at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont, Calif., a plant that Toyota last year ruled too inefficient to keep open.

Tesla will acquire the now-closed NUMMI property and employ 1,000 people building unspecified electric vehicles in a partnership with the world's largest automaker, the companies announced today in Palo Alto, Calif.

Toyota will invest $50 million in the small California-based electric sports maker in exchange for Tesla's common stock when the EV company completes its planned initial public offering.

Speaking at the announcement, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said he admired the entrepreneurial spirit at Tesla and hoped the venture will teach Toyota about quick decision-making and flexibility.

“Decades ago,” Toyoda said, “Toyota was also born as a venture business. By partnering with Tesla, my hope is that all Toyota employees will recall that venture business spirit, and take on the challenges of the future.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his company would spend “a couple of hundred million dollars” preparing NUMMI for the project.

NUMMI, a former joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, closed earlier this year amid a storm of criticism from the plant's UAW work force.

Musk said the negotiations to acquire the closed plant concluded yesterday.

He said that Tesla's next model, a Model S that will debut in 2012, will only account for about 20,000 units a year, but said other models will follow off of the Model S platform.

“We're going to be occupying a little corner,” Musk said.

He said that eventually the project would account for 10,000 jobs, including supplier jobs.

Tesla's Model S is being made possible thanks to a $465 million low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. Until that product appears, Tesla is marketing a two-seat electric sports car that retails for more than $100,000.

Tesla has said that the Model S will sell for closer to $40,000.

Until now, Toyota has expressed little interest in electric cars. The Japanese automaker has staked considerable research and marketing investment on its popular hybrid-drive vehicles, including the Prius and hybrid Camry

car did not shift into a higher gear

Question:

I have a 2000 Chevy Blazer v-6 with an auto transmission. I had been servicing it regularly and did not abuse it. Yesterday while driving to have my oil changed the car did not shift into a higher gear. now my car will not shift into reverse also unless I let up on the gas it won''t shift into a higher gear. The guys at the oil changing place thinks it electrical. They dropped the oil pan and changed the filter. Is it a major problem or just a adjustment problem.

Answer:

There are no adjustments so i would have to go with the major problem. If it was just a solenoid then it would only have one problem ( loss of one gear, not more ) so I would say you are looking at having it rebuilt or replaced.

Used Car Review - Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi (2008-2014)

With the new generation in the spotlight, Myk Belmonte evaluates the old model and sees if it is a bargain buy.

2008-2014 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi

History
To steer clear of the expected words which will pop up on this paragraph, let me just tell this trait done in the car universe. Just like beer, car companies do offer regular, mild, and super versions of their vehicles. Regular are the plain jane performance models, mild are for those who wouldn't want to be intimidated, and super are reserved for the experienced.

Same story with the regular version, so let us just tell you the related items here. WRX models first debuted to the world, alongside with their regular counterparts, in April 2007 while the tamer STi model was made available in October 2007. Unlike the regular's 2011 availability, those who wanted the high performance model had to wait until 2013 but only available in a sedan body.

As mentioned in the Subaru Impreza review last year, the trunkless version came to the scene through the launching of both variants for the said body style. On the other hand, the sedan configuration was made available in April 2009 but only in WRX flavor. A late 2010 update had the WRX STi being refreshed and necessitated the discontinuation of the WRX variant. Last month, a new generation model of this rally bred vehicle is made available to Filipino consumers which makes this one a great bargain for less cash.

Value and Costs
Please to tell you this news that you can get this rally star for a snip of P900,000 for older models while recent ones costs you P1,400,000. As a general rule, going with a July 2011 and later model is the key to utilize the remainder of the warranty. Anything that appears to be modified extensively is a huge no-no, especially that it spoils the fun in a huge way including your money.

Basically, you should not expect low maintenance costs similar to your top end Corolla or Civic or heck, a regular Impreza. But be thankful that it is lower than a Mustang or that supercar you are drooling about. Apart from the regular wear and tear that one would expect, check if the vehicle is modified.

Exterior and Interior
Everything that is applicable to the regular version is applied here, but the differences include the following (and mostly apply to the WRX STi except when noted): a different rim design, the presence of a hood scoop (for both models), larger fenders, a rear spoiler, and more mufflers. The WRX may look plain but it is one sleeper car.

Space is excellent, something that competitors are ashamed of while interior quality is definitely tops. Everything else were lifted from its non-performance counterparts save for the glowing pink steering wheel on the WRX STi.

Engine
There are two separate engines for both variants which keeps their personalities distinct from one another. If you are purchasing the WRX model, then be informed that it has the EJ255 2,457cc belching out 230hp at 5,200rpm and 320Nm at 2,800rpm. For the power and rev happy in you, then the standard option for WRX STi models is an EJ257 2,457cc displacing 296hp at 6,000rpm and 407Nm at 4,000rpm for MT variants and 350Nm at 3,000-6,000rpm for AT models. Do remember that in a 2010 update, the MT is exclusive for the WRX STi sedan while the AT is reserved for the hatchback. When it comes to performance, both have different styles especially that the WRX is blistering fast but not to the point of scaring the first time driver while going with the WRX STi must be done wisely since the MT is a better pick against the AT which does not thrill the drive unless your route involves traffic jams.

Driving Impressions
Do take note that updated models carry a stiffer suspension which can be both an advantage and disadvantage for some people. When it comes to driving pleasure, it will give you smiles all day and the engine tears up the roof, just don't mind the horrible fuel economy which comes standard.

Verdict
This vehicle can perform two tasks in which you can take it to the daily grind and you can have fun during the weekends. Subaru's task is, in a way, succeeded well especially that its main rival is harsh. What can be expensive before is now affordable for ordinary blokes like us.

The Good:
  • Practical
  • Fast
  • Now affordable
The Bad:
  • Not fuel friendly
  • Power grabbing automatic transmission
  • Maintenance costs will kill you

GM posts $865 million Q1 profit

General Motors Co. posted a first-quarter profit as production snapped back and said it was making progress on a turnaround expected to put it on track toward its first full-year profit since 2004.

Analysts said the results underscored the progress GM made by slashing costs in a bankruptcy funded by the Obama administration and kept open the prospect of the automaker launching an initial public offering as soon as this year.

GM recorded a net profit of $865 million, compared with a loss of $5.98 billion a year before, as it ramped up production by nearly 57 percent from year-earlier levels to meet steadier demand in the United States and a sales boom in China.

"Now that we have achieved profitability, the next step is to achieve sustainable profitability," CFO Chris Liddell told reporters.

Liddell said GM had a "good chance" of making a profit for all of 2010, although gains from ramping up production would fade after the first quarter.

He declined to offer a forecast for the rest of 2010. He also put some conditions on the timing of a possible initial public offering.

GM will make an IPO only “when the markets and the company are ready,” he said. “What's out of our control are the readiness of the markets and the status of the global auto industry.”

In addition, GM Controller Nick Cyprus cautioned that GM must further refine its internal financial controls before company managers have a clear view of financial performance. He expressed optimism that would be accomplished before an IPO.

GM received $50 billion of U.S. government financing for its restructuring in bankruptcy. It has been aiming to launch an IPO that would allow the U.S. government to reduce its stake of nearly 61 percent in the automaker.

“The unfortunate process of bankruptcy is yielding positive results,” Rebecca Lindland, an analyst at IHS Global Insight, said in an interview. “It certainly keeps them on track for an IPO.”

Revenue soars

First-quarter revenue was $31.48 billion, a 40 percent advance from a year earlier, when GM was on the brink of bankruptcy after collapsing U.S. demand sent the industry into a tailspin. The automaker generated $1 billion in free cash flow during the quarter and said it ended the period with $35.7 billion in cash.

GM's first-quarter global sales rose 23 percent to nearly 2 million vehicles, including sales of GM's affiliate brands in China: Wuling and FAW-GM.

GM used bankruptcy to drop brands, cull U.S. dealerships and reduce debt. At the end of the first quarter, GM had debt and preferred stock of just over $20 billion, down from $54 billion a year earlier with government creditors taking the place of bondholders.

"The promise of the bankruptcy was to reduce costs, and it worked. That bodes well for the future," said John Wolkonowicz, an analyst with IHS Global Insight.

GM posted a $4.3 billion loss in 2009, from the time it emerged from bankruptcy in early July until the end of the year. The automaker fell into bankruptcy after losses of about $88 billion from 2005 through the first quarter of 2009.

Analysts have said GM still faces steep challenges in repairing the reputation of its brands led by Chevrolet in its home market. Another area of weakness is Europe, where GM posted a first-quarter loss of $506 million and sales for its Opel and Vauxhall brands were down almost 1 percent.

"They're headed in the right direction, but one quarter is not going to turn the ship around," said Mirko Mikelic, a portfolio manager for Fifth Third Asset Management.

GM's market share was stable at 11 percent of global sales and at about 18 percent of North American sales.

U.S. rivals

IHS Global Insight's Wolkonowicz said the results showed GM was in a stronger position than its smaller rival, Chrysler, while still lagging Ford Motor Co. Ford posted a $2.1 billion first-quarter profit and has forecast that it will be solidly profitable for 2010.

In a step aimed at strengthening its ability to compete with rivals, GM has been looking at options to re-establish a captive auto financing arm, people with knowledge of the plans said last week.

Such a move would mark a nearly complete reversal of the process that started in late 2006 when GM sold off a controlling stake in GMAC to raise cash.

Detroit-based GMAC, now known as Ally Financial, is 56 percent owned by the U.S. Treasury after the government injected $17 billion as part of a restructuring that also saw the finance company become a commercial bank.

Liddell said it was "incredibly important" for GM to have a strong financing partner but said it was "debatable" whether that needed to be a captive finance firm as GMAC once was.

Answer:

Sounds like some typical GM issues. More than likely you will need to have the BCM ( body control module ) replaced. This is a common problem. This will need to be done at a dealer as they need to flash the computer after it is installed.
