My low coolant light came on, What could it be ?

My son's 2000 Saab 95 SE said engine coolant low so he added coolant. Here it is 2 days later and it is saying it again. When he filled it the first time he saw that there was still some coolant in the reservoir but it was low.. Any ideas how serious it could be?

Answer:

I would check two things.

1. Is there enough coolant. If there is not enough coolant again you need to check if the coolant is leaking out. You can rent a pressure tester from Autozone to find leaks. It's very simple to use and very effective. It's a radiator cap with a hand held pump attached, you take your cap off and attach the pump. Then pump and listen for leaks (done with car off so leaks are easy to find).

2. Coolant level sensor. If you have enough coolant, yet the light is still coming on then the sensor is bad. The sensor should be located on the reservoir, if you have coolant then it's giving a false reading.

Toyota Recall - Frequently Asked Questions For Sticking Accelerator Pedal

Which models are affected by the recall/stop sale?

Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

•Certain 2015-2010 RAV4,

•Certain 2015-2010 Corolla,

•2015-2010 Matrix,

•2005-2010 Avalon,

•Certain 2007-2010 Camry,

•Certain 2010 Highlander,

•2007-2010 Tundra,

•2015-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are affected by these actions. Also not affected are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids, which will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with "J" are not affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall.

What is the condition that has prompted Toyota to take this action?

In rare instances, there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

What is the likelihood that my vehicle will experience this condition?

The condition is rare and does not occur suddenly. It can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

Are you continuing to investigate other models?

Toyota is confident that all models that contain the potentially sticking pedals have been identified.

Why has Toyota stopped selling the affected vehicles?

Until Toyota has finalized an appropriate remedy to address the potential for sticking accelerator pedals, a sales suspension is necessary.

How long will this stop sale be in effect?

New cars covered by this recall will not be delivered until a remedy is finalized and then implemented.

When do you expect to have a remedy?

Toyota is making every effort to remedy this situation for customers as quickly as possible.

What options are you exploring for a remedy?

Toyota is reviewing a number of different options, and the company hopes to announce a remedy soon.

What should I do if I believe my vehicle is affected by this condition, i.e. I have noticed that my accelerator pedal is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation. What should I do?

The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.

What if you experience a sticking accelerator pedal while driving?

Each circumstance may vary, and drivers must use their best judgment, but Toyota recommends taking one of the following actions:

• If you need to stop immediately, the vehicle can be controlled by stepping on the brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the brake pedal as it will deplete the vacuum utilized for the power brake assist.

• Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.

• If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.

• If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.

• If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.

If I am an owner of one of the affected vehicles, what action do I need to take?

Toyota is working quickly to prepare a correction remedy and will issue owner notifications in the future. No action is required at this time unless you feel you are experiencing this condition. If you are experiencing this condition, immediately contact your nearest Toyota Dealer for assistance.

Toyota stated that this did not affect new/low mileage vehicles, has the situation changed?

The law requires that the entire universe of new vehicles identified in the recall notice must be included in the stop sale.

Why are you stopping production at your factories?

Production is being stopped temporarily at five North American production facilities to assess and coordinate activities related to the recall announced on January 21.

What should I do if I still have questions or concerns?

If you still have questions or concerns that have not been addressed here, please contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

The Toyota Customer Experience Center hours are:

Mon - Fri, 5:00 am - 6:00 pm PST

1989 Chevy Truck tail lights go out when I hit the Brakes

I have a 1989 Chevy pick up scottsdale 1500 the left tail light goes out when I activate the brakes any advice would be helpful. thanks

Response:

It's either a bad ground or a bad light socket itself and very common to fail. Your wire harness runs down the drivers side just inside the frame rail to just below the left tail light where it forks and part goes up the other over to the right tail light with quick connectors for the license plate light. UNLESS, someone has installed an aftermarket trailer wiring package. Also check your trailer connection. even though your not using the connection you are still receiving power to the plug. use a test light to make sure it's working properly.

good luck

There’s MORE to know about TIRES than you might think….

Tire Basics:
Underinflated tires reduce gas mileage and causes tires to prematurely wear out.  Many years ago tires were inflated to approximately 32 psi, today most tires are inflated to 40 psi.   A simple, inexpensive tire gauge is used to measure tire pressure.  If you don’t know how to use a tire pressure gauge, most repair shops or an automotive parts store will show you how to use one.

Tire Sizes:
The size of your tire is printed on the tire and it starts with a “P.” After the “P” are two numbers an “R” then two more numbers.  For example a common tire we replace is a P215/65R15.   The “P” means passenger tires, the 215 is the width of the tire in millimeters, 65 is the ratio of the height to the width of the tire (basically the distance from the edge of the rim to the face of the tire), and 15 is the radius of the rim in inches.

Load Index & Speed Rating:
After the size is a group of two to three numbers and a letter.  The numbers are a “Load Index” and indicate how much weight the tires can support.  A load index of 94 supports up to 1477 pounds.  The letter after the load index is the speed rating- the maximum safe speed for the tires.  A “T” speed rating is safe up to 118 miles per hour.  A “W” speed rating is safe up to 168 miles per hour.  Between T and W there are many other speed ratings.  The higher the speed rating the better the tire ‘grips’ the road.  However, since it grips the road better than a lower speed rated tire, the higher speed rated tire wears out quicker.

You may use a higher speed rated tire than the manufacturer recommends, but you should never use a lower speed rated tire.

Winter- Summer Tires
I remember as a kid helping my father change his tires in the fall from summer tires to winter tires, and in the spring we’d change them back.  I don’t know how the tire manufactures did it, but we no longer have to change tires for the winter and the summer.  There are winter tires, but you probably don’t need them.  If you look at your tires and see “M + S” printed after the speed rating then your tires are good for winter and summer.

Tire Manufacturing Date Stamps:
Starting in 2000 tires have a manufactured date stamped on the side of the tires.  Sometimes the date is on the inside of the tire, and sometimes it is on the outside of the tire.  It is a four digit code.  The firs two digits indicate the week the tire was made and the last two digits indicate the year it was made.  So a ‘4010’ would mean the tire was made in the 40th week of 2010.

TPMS (Something new):
A few years ago a rash of roll-overs was attributed to old and underinflated tires.  After investigating why these vehicles rolled-over Ford recommended that tires be replaced every five years regardless of wear.  The NTSB mandated the use of a “Tire Pressure Monitoring System.” This system is referred to as “TPMS.”  All cars and trucks manufactured since 2010 have this system.

TPMS use a wireless pressure sensor in the tire to communicate with an onboard computer.  If a tire is underinflated by 20% or more a light on the dash illuminates indicating an underinflated tire.  The sensor in the tire is battery operated and the valve stem is part of this system.  When the battery goes bad, or the valve stem breaks the sensor must be replaced, and they are not cheap.  While it’s too early to tell, I have been told the battery will last for seven years.

On some cars, after the tires are rotated, the TPMS computer must be reset or the dash light will come on falsely indicating an underinflated tire.

While TPMS have added a measure of safety, they come with a cost.

I have A 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee reading code p1281

I have A 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee reading code p1281 what is it and how do I fix it . I know it is a factory direct code it says fuel air metering p1281

Answer:

This code actually means the engine stays cold too long. This could be caused by extremely cold weather, malfunctioning ECT sensor, or a thermostat that does not let the engine warm up. In most cases, replacing the thermostat will fix this issue.

SYMPTOM
P1281-ENGINE IS COLD TOO LONG
WHEN MONITORED
The ignition key on, engine running, Ambient Temperature greater than 20°F ; and Vacuum is
less than 17 inches Hg .
SET CONDITION
The engine does not warm to 85°C (181°F) while driving for more than 3 minutes and less than
1 hour depending on Engine load and Start up Temperature

1999 Ford E-150 has a misfire problem that I can't seem to fix

TPS Sensor

My 1999, E-150 has a misfire problem that I can't seem to fix. I had to replace the Camshaft Sensor due to the 3-wire connector being fused together during a simple thermostat replacement. I had trouble connecting the Sensor back onto the 3-wire coupling due to an electrical degreaser I used, which melted the 3-wire insulation and caused the wires to touch each other.

After I put it all back together, and started the engine, I got nothing to run. So..... after breaking it all down again to discover the Camshaft Sensor fried, along with the 30amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood, I had to go find another connector (used) and a NEW sensor, and put it all back together. The engine turned on!

But..... the motor ran a bit rough at idle. Then I drove the van around and the misfire was in all driving gears and RPM's. It was rough enough for me to park the van and try to diagnose the problem. I replaced the spark plugs, tested the Coil Pack with an Ohm meter and still nothing helped.

What do I do now?

Response:

Try your T.PS. sensor sounds like that may be the real problem. I had same problem and that fixed mine.

2003 Buick Century and the light that shows the odometer

I have a 2003 Buick Century and the light that shows the odometer and what gear you are in is burned out. How does one replace it? It looks like to me that I would have to take the top dashboard off to replace it. What light bulb would I need?

Answer:

you would have to replace the entire instrument panel cluster since the lights are not serviceable for the odometer and PRNDL display. I can provide instructions to replace the instrument panel cluster if you wish but you will likely have to get a cluster from a dealership.

1996 Chrysler Town & Country started making a noise after I hit a pothole

My 1996 Chrysler Town & Country started making a noise after I hit a pothole and thought my tire was flat. Tires are fine, but they still make a small thud noise. There is no real noise when I accelerate, however, as soon as I take my foot off the gas, it makes a very loud growling sound like sticking something metal in a fan blade would sound. Thought is was CV joints, but everything I'm reading says the noise happens when you accelerate, not when you stop accelerating. What do you think?

Answer:

That sounds like your exhaust is hitting the frame. When the car decelerates the motor tilts back, the can cause the exhaust to rub or bad against the frame or car. There are rubber hangers that are supposed to prevent this from happening, but they tend to wear out. I would check all the hanger of the exhaust as well as the transmission mount and motor mounts. All these are rubber and known to go bad, which would cause noise while decelerating.

2004 G35 inspected yesterday. A code P 21.35 came up on the computer

2004 Infiniti G35

Question:

I had a 2004 G35 inspected yesterday. A code P 21.35 came up on the computer check. when I left the garage the car wouldn't respond when I pressed the gas pedal. I shut the engine off and restarted the car and the car accelerated again. This is a used car I am interested in purchasing. Is this a costly problem to repair. Also when the car was on the lift the rubber was corroded on the torque arm mounts and needs replacing. What cost is that repair. I took the car for a test drive it worked fine. I took a second test drive this week to the mechanic. He found code p21.35 was off. When I tried to leave the mechanic the car would only go 5 miles per hour. The mechanic shut off the engine and restarted the engine and the car would now accelerate but the engine light now says it needs service.

Answer:

Code p2135 is simply the throttle position sensor, call around to your local parts stores and get some quotes on the part. You should be able to install it yourself in a few minutes.

Oil Pressure Question

OK guys, my 1989 S-10 Blazer has an oil leak, I know this for sure. It has the oil filter on the fender well. Normally when the oil gets low the gauge drops below 40 and the light comes on. Last night when I was stopping at street lights I was starting to hear a slight knocking noise. The oil pressure gauge was still reading between 60-80 however when I checked the dipstick, there was no oil. Well, I threw in 4 quarts of oil, waited 10 minutes, checked and there was oil on the dipstick. Oil gauge was still reading 40-60 pressure.

What would make the gauge show pressure when there is no oil?

Oh, about 2 months ago, the converter plugged up and the truck backfired and blew the gasket out of the valve cover, but not to where the cover warped or leaks oil. We cut off the converter,it smoked for a few days, ran really rough and then cleared up and I haven't had problems with it until last night. After the oil was put in, it started smoking and running rough again. We didn't replace the muffler so i assume that is most likely plugged again, causing the smoke and rough running.

Response:

Oil filter remotely mounted? Haven't saw one of those since my 53 Chevy. I would look at what is moving the oil from the engine to the filter and back. Possible leak there. 60-80 psi is way too high. But gauges as they get older are not very accurate, and they can stick. Is the dip stick original? Was it changed for a shorter one? Without looking at the ride, it's only a guess at this point. If you plan to keep it, tow it in to a good mechanic and have him take a leak at it.

Here we are talking about at least 2 problems. They may be related. The Oil problem, air in your oil line will still give you a pressure reading although it is False. The lack of oil giving you the bearing knock is proof enough. Now, if you run your engine low on oil it runs at a Hotter Temp and causes wear and heat damages. Now remember this, the cat converter was attached and was removed because it was believed to be plugged. If it was then there is a good chance of Carbon Deposit Build Up in the EGR System. What is the Carbon? It's your engine oil cooked from heat. What is your EGR System? Exhaust Gas Recirculatory System. What removes Carbon? Heat. What causes the re occurance? Lack of Oil.

Window stuck down on my 1997 Lincoln Town Car

a cable to the window regulator in the driver's side door broke and the window is all the way down. Have taken off the door panel to try to push the window up, however it is stuck. How can I release the window to hold it up while the new regulator arrives?

Response:

I'm ASSUMING that you are referring to the nylon track itself being broken. There are 2 10mm nuts on the bottom of the glass that hold the window to the track. Unbolt and slide the window up and use a piece of rope on the inside of the window to control it up and down until you get the track. You can tie off 1 end to the door closer strap to keep the window up and still use the door.

Focus 54reg 1.6 auto. It keeps blowing headlight bulbs

Question:

I have a Focus 54reg 1.6 auto. It keeps blowing headlight bulbs - mostly the left one and usually on starting car or shortly after switching lights on. Have been using Bosch light recently - no difference. 4 bulbs in 2008!

Answer:

When the bulb heats up , the filament is prone to breaking if there is excessive vibration. You should check that the headlamp unit is securely bolted and that the bulb sits tight in its seat and the spring retaining clip is actually pressing against the bulb base to keep it in place.

1999 Chevy Tahoe and I need to replace the Blower Motor Resistor

Blower Motor Resistor = 1

I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe and I need to replace the Blower Motor Resistor. I understand that it is on top of the blower and access is by removing the radio and heater control panel. Can anyone advise the easiest and best way to safely remove the dash panels to gain access? I don’t want to break anything during the removal process. Thanks!

Response:

The Resistor is under the hood in the engine compartment. It's held onto the fibreglass case with 2 1/4 screws and has 4 wires, 1 going to the blower itself and 3 going into the main harness and back to the switch. So follow that Orange or Tan 10 gauge wire on the blower back to that resistor.

98 wrangler that is in excellent shape, only problem is center brake light does not work.

Just bought a 98 wrangler that is in excellent shape, only problem is center brake light does not work. When I apply 12v to the two connectors on the rear door, the light lights up so I know that everything in the door is OK.When I check for voltage at the connector on the body, I get 8.5v. Any ideas on where to check next?

ANSWER:

It looks like it is a straight shot from the brake switch to the rear. Pin 6 (wt/tn) goes to the CAB and the 3rd stop bulb. The next step is to test that ckt at the brake switch to see if it is 12v.
The wire diagram on line really stinks. I'll need to check the service manual in the a.m. to see where the harness runs in the body and if there may be any other connectors in between. I would say you've got a "green" wire in that harness it's just a question of locating it.

(The CAB is the anti-lock brake control module. The ground ckt is at the connector at the rear of the Jeep in cavity 5. )

95 Chevy G 20 keeps blowing multiable fuses...

My blinkers were working then I had to do them manually and then they started working again then I smelled smoke and they quit altogether. I also lost my brake lights too at the same time. I changed the bulbs and that didn't work, I took it to muffler man and he said I had multiable fuses blown, but didn't know what had caused it to do that. Muffler man changed the fuses and when I picked up the van, I drove for about 30 minutes and they all blew again. Also I have a small hole in the radiator up at the very top side by the corner, can I use a sealant to fix it or do I have to replace it? it's not leaking enough to even hit the ground, but you can see where it's coming fromby the bubbling it does. So I was hoping maybe someone out there may know something about this problem. Thanks a bunch

Honda accord ex 2000 coupe, the accessory power outlet doesn't work

Question:

I have a Honda Accord ex 2000 coupe, the accessory power outlet doesn't work, fuse is OK

Answer:

there is a fuse wire on the outlet itself that can go out . but first check the socket itself and both fuses

2000 ACCORD - Accessory Power Socket Test/Replacement
1. Remove the center console.
2. Disconnect the 2P connector.
3. Inspect the connector terminals to be sure they are all making good contact.
· If the terminals are bent, loose or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system.
· If the terminals look OK, go to step 4.
4. Turn the ignition switch ACC (I), and check for voltage between the No. 1 and No. 2 terminals.
· There should be battery voltage.
· If there is no battery voltage, check for:
- blown No. 8 (7.5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box.
- faulty accessory socket relay.
- poor ground (G501, G581).
- an open in the wire.
- blown No.9 (20 A) in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box.

No Heat in my 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0 engine. This morning I Started my truck and let it set for 15 minutes to warm up and defrost the windshield. When I went back out there was no heat at all coming from the defrost or the heater. I drove it around after scraping the windshield and still no heat. It was working fine before, what could it be?

Response:

As long as your coolant level is full, you may have a bad thermostat or a clogged heater core. With the engine running at normal operating temperature, check the heater hoses to see if both sides are hot or if one side is cold. If one side is cold, then you have a clogged heater core and it will need to be replaced. Look for about 8 hours for this job.

I have a Jeep Wrangler with a bad engine, can i swap it out?

I have a 2000 4.0 5 speed wrangler with a bad engine and am trying to put a 4.0 from a 2006 four door wrangler in it. the 2006 was an automatic. The problem i have is the pilot bearing . the book shows the same from 1993 to 2006 but it looks like i need a different one of some sort. What do i need to do ?

Answer:

the pilot bearing will have to be removed.... the automatic flywheel will need to be replace with the manual

here is the main problem... the electrical system is different between the 2 motors. different crank sensors and communication between the 2 jeeps...
i am not 100 % sure it will run when you get it installed. what i recommend is calling jeep and asking a parts specialist if there is a different part # for the 2006 motor and the 2000 motor....
i am willing to bet there will be more to switch than just the engine and flywheel.......

before you go through this i would highly advise to please check on the engine part numbers.....

Engine fault code 39. not listed in owners manual.

Question:

1993 Jaguar XJ-S 4.0 ltr 6 cyl fault code 39. not listed in owners manual.
What is it and what could it mean?

Answer;

A fault code 39 indicates that there is a problem with the EGR temperature sensor circuit. The ECM monitors the temperature at the intake manifold EGR adapter to determine if exhaust gas is flowing when the EGR valve is commanded open. Check for a malfunctioning EGR valve, carbon deposits clogging the EGR passages, a faulty EGR temperature sensor, or an electrical problem affecting the EGR temperature sensor circuit. The EGR temperature sensor is screwed into the EGR adapter on the right side of the engine. It is part #LHE1610AA and sells for 129.75 at any jaguar dealer parts department.

Mazda 3 Sedan - Generation 1.2 (2007-2012)

MAZDA 3 SEDAN (2007-2012)

For 2007, the 3 was treated to a new face and the fuel system was revised. Do remember that the hatchback (featured separately) is positioned between the 1.6 V and 2.0 R. No changes occurred for this version so keep an eye on the condition. This would be replaced by an imported Mazda 3 in 2012.
