1996 Jeep Cherokee won't start

My Jeep has a new battery and starter. The fusible link and alternator are also good but the damn thing will not start. All fuses and relays are good too. When I turn the key I get nothing, no sounds what so ever. Anyone have an idea of what it could be? we can however start the car by "shorting out" the starter from underneath the car but that is the only way we can get it to start.

Ignition switch

Neutral / park switch if the unit has automatic trans.

simple test. Run a wire from the positive battery post to the alternator output *that red wire on the back of the alternator). Try starting the Jeep. If it starts you've blown a fuse link. If not you've got other problems. With the Key on in the Run position does ANYTHING work?? Radio, Gauges???

 

Just because an item has been Replaced does not ensure that it is NOT Defective. No Power to any electrical with the Key on is a Prime example of a Wiring problem. Usually a Fusible Link on the Starter. Fusible Links look like a wire and may look fine to the eye however, like a fuse be burnt under the protective coat. This is why I asked if you have power with the key on to your accesories. If NO power simply run a wire to the Alt from the Pos on the battery and leave the key and radio on. If the radio starts as soon as the battery is connected then you have a Blown Fuse Link. Skipping steps lead you astray.

If you have power to the accesories then is it an Automatic Trans or Stick? If it's a stick check tyhe clutch Depression Switch on the top of the Clutch Pedal. Hint it's that plastic thing that has 2 wires and moves with the Clutch Pedal. If it Automatic, wiggle the shifter in Neutral while holding the key on the start position. This checks the Neutral Safty Switch.

wrangler is overheating and has an entire new cooling system.

wrangler Jeep 4.0, my 94 wrangler is overheating and has an entire new cooling system. it now is idling rough and stalls out. whats wrong? replaced the entire cooling system. was fine for a month now it overheats again and idles rough and dies

Answer;

This is a classic sign of a blown head gasket. To confirm this, have a compression test done. All cylinders should be within 20 psi of each other. If not, you have a blown head gasket. Have the head check for cracks once removed to be on the safe side.

Automatic Climate Control:
This is a common issue with the the Grand Cherokee's. This is caused by a failed electronic actuator that controls the mode(directional) door inside the air flow box mounted under the dash. Removal of the dash is required for this repair and can take up to 13 hours of labor. I do recommend having a dealer do this for you unless you are a seasoned mechanic.
Manual Climate Control:
A vacuum line going to the mode(directional) door manual vacuum actuator inside the air flow box mounted under the dash has cracked or the actuator has failed. Removal of the dash is required and can take up to 11 hours of labor.

Grand Cherokee 4.0 has a stalling problem

My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 has a stalling problem. I have checked the basics (plugs, coil, rotor, crank pos sensor). When it stalls it stops like it was turned off. will often restart and run OK for a day or so, sometimes a few weeks

If the crank position sensor has been replaced. then with the switch of type situation it usually comes down to a bad pcm or a 5 volt sensor feed shorting.
the main places I look for a short are the back corners of the head. at the area of the distributor and the oxygen sensor wires specifically the rear o2 hitting the drive-shaft.

the transfer case was hummimg and has gotten very loud

I own a 1996 6 cyl Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4, it has just over 200 thousand miles on it, the transfer case was humming and has gotten very loud. How many different things can be wrong in a transfer case and should I just try to find an entire transfer case(used) to replace it or could it be something simple and cheap(LOL) that I could check first?

Answer:

A loud transfer case humm is in most cases is a bad bearing. First thing to do is a transfer case service drain the fluid and check color. Also check the magnet for bearing shavings.If this is a bad bearing the transfer case will need to be taken apart and reared.

2007 Wrangler Unlimited. I want to lift it 3-4 inches

I have a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited. I want to lift it 3-4 inches. Is there anything else I have to be aware of, i.e. sway bars, ect, going up that amount. And what are some good kits you would recommend?

any good kit will have everything in it you need i would recommend either teraflex or rubicon express they both have very nice complete kits and have great tech support if you need it

I got a new(ish) Jeep over the weekend, previous owner beat the snot out of it and now I'm fixing a lot of small problems, got the list down to a few now, first the check engine light comes on occasionally and then goes off for awhile, I tried the flipping of the key and that didn't show any codes or anything then found the trip odometer trick for the newer jeeps and it didn't give any either so then I took it to the parts store and used their scanner and found p0505 and p0743. I found the p0505 is idle air control? and p0743 has something to do with the torque converter? any help with the next step would be appreciated!!! its a 1999 Jeep Cherokee classic(not grand) 4.0 auto 4wd with 225k on it... it was towed behind a motor home so who knows how many miles are really on it

How does the Jeep seem to run other than the codes? For example, does the idle seem normal? Does it do anything unusual, especially when the light is coming on?

My 2000 jeep grand cherokee sounds like the engine is knocking, there is no oil presure, and it will not stay running. What do I do?

Answer:

If you have this many problems with this engine I would suggest getting a used engine with low miles and a warranty you can get one for less than a 1,000 and installed for around 500-600 dollars. Once they begin knocking I don't repair them because you don't know about contamination in the engine from metal. And it's very costly to have an engine rebuilt. Especially with no oil pressure it's probably spun a bearing in the lower end of the engine.

I purchased a 2007 Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited and it is a 4x2. a Mechanic friend of mine was going to assist in converting it into a 4x4. Short story, we have fallen out and I have no knowledge of completing this job. My question is would this conversion be as simple as swamping out the front axle with Dana 44 purchased from MOPAR? Please advise on specific parts I would need to complete the Job

dual heating and cooling sysem the passenger side turns cold and gives off nothing but COLD air

I have a '99 Grand Cherokee Limited with dual heating and cooling system. The heater works fine for a very short time (15 or 20 minutes), after which time the passenger side turns cold and gives off nothing but COLD air. How do I fix this problem?

This code actually means the engine stays cold too long. This could be caused by extremely cold weather, malfunctioning ECT sensor, or a thermostat that does not let the engine warm up. In most cases, replacing the thermostat will fix this issue.

98 wrangler that is in excellent shape, only problem is center brake light does not work.

Just bought a 98 wrangler that is in excellent shape, only problem is center brake light does not work. When I apply 12v to the two connectors on the rear door, the light lights up so I know that everything in the door is OK.When I check for voltage at the connector on the body, I get 8.5v. Any ideas on where to check next?

ANSWER:

It looks like it is a straight shot from the brake switch to the rear. Pin 6 (wt/tn) goes to the CAB and the 3rd stop bulb. The next step is to test that ckt at the brake switch to see if it is 12v.
The wire diagram on line really stinks. I'll need to check the service manual in the a.m. to see where the harness runs in the body and if there may be any other connectors in between. I would say you've got a "green" wire in that harness it's just a question of locating it.

(The CAB is the anti-lock brake control module. The ground ckt is at the connector at the rear of the Jeep in cavity 5. )

I have a Jeep Wrangler with a bad engine, can i swap it out?

I have a 2000 4.0 5 speed wrangler with a bad engine and am trying to put a 4.0 from a 2006 four door wrangler in it. the 2006 was an automatic. The problem i have is the pilot bearing . the book shows the same from 1993 to 2006 but it looks like i need a different one of some sort. What do i need to do ?

the pilot bearing will have to be removed.... the automatic flywheel will need to be replace with the manual

here is the main problem... the electrical system is different between the 2 motors. different crank sensors and communication between the 2 jeeps...
i am not 100 % sure it will run when you get it installed. what i recommend is calling jeep and asking a parts specialist if there is a different part # for the 2006 motor and the 2000 motor....
i am willing to bet there will be more to switch than just the engine and flywheel.......

before you go through this i would highly advise to please check on the engine part numbers.....
