Used Car Review - Mercedes Benz C Class Sedan (2007-2014)

Myk Belmonte gives you a desirable car in time for Christmas.

2007-2014 Mercedes Benz C Class Sedan

History
Mention the word "European compact executive" and the two cars that comes to mind are the 3 Series and C Class, both popular for many reasons. The 3 Series is the benchmark of the class nearly snatching all (except for one model) the accolades for Car and Driver's 10Best. The C Class is an alternative since the BMW has it all. Let's skip that part.

Under the W204 chassis code, this C Class was developed using a digital prototype before an actual test mule was utilized. The 2.1 terabyte digital replica was subjected to a 15 million mile road test and its design was selected in 2003 and design patents were filed a year later which showcased a fiberglass design model of what would be the W204 model. Bet you didn't know: this car was a serious contender of the E90 3 Series when it comes to sales since the differences aren't much huge.

CATS Motors launched the C Class in sedan form only, with the old wagon being discontinued for the local market while the coupe was added in 2011.

Value and Costs
Since this is a Benz, resale values are excellent when compared to other brands like Audi and Volvo. With this car not being too old, prices would hover above a million peso mark regardless of model.

Being a luxury model, go for something that had been inspected by the local dealer for your peace of mind. Also, using low octane fuel for certain cars that has a supercharger (2007-2011) or turbocharger (2015-2014) in it can deteriorate the performance of the vehicle. No serious issues have been reported apart from those usual wear and tear.

Exterior and Interior
Replacing the W203's softer lines and rounder headlights is a much more bold and striking body which defines Benzes nowadays. 2007 to 2010 C180 models made do with 16 inch steel wheels with cover until it used alloys later on. AMG Sport models have, well, body kits from AMG.

In Mercedes jargon, Avantgarde models are the ones having stainless steel and aluminum accents while Elegance is luxury oriented with wood panels but this model is only available during the first part of the vehicle's run. In other items, there's the COMAND control system with a 4.5 inch colored instrumental panel which may be confusing for first timers but easy to use for novices to the three pointed brand. Some higher variants get triple zone air-conditioning while others have dual.

Engine
A confusing array of engines comes standard in the W204 C Class, especially that six engine options were available during the first half while only five (three of them are the 1.8 having varying horsepower figures) remained later on. Do take note that 2011 to 2014 models have a CGI treatment which gains a turbocharger. Acceleration may vary from the fast and steady to the extremely fast while the 7-speed automatic is smooth with this one defaulting to second gear when accelerating from a stop.

Driving Impressions
Prefer a Benz while getting a BMW's driving athleticism? Then this model is for you, especially that older models are fast in straights but acts like a boat on corners. Due to a stiff body shell and an excellent suspension set up, this is one C Class that can take on the 3 Series when it comes to driving fun. While the efforts are there, it does not still knock out the benchmark especially that handling is on the safe side plus steering feel is tuned for comfort. Speaking of comfort, it does make an edge over the closest rival. You get the best of both worlds.

Verdict
Yes, the 3 Series may be the top dog of the class but let us not forget the efforts done by Mercedes Benz on making their compact executive being a little sporty.
The Good:
  • Very solid
  • A delight to drive
  • Spacious
The Bad:
  • Expensive to maintain (if you don't have the money)
  • The 3 Series is still fun to drive
  • Noisy at high speeds
The Pick: C200

Used Car Review - Isuzu Alterra (2005-2014)

Myk Belmonte reviews this SUV which didn't catch the radar of others back then.

2005-2014 Isuzu Alterra

History
Passenger pick-up vehicles (or commonly called as PPV) are a popular vehicle segment in Thailand, mainly because pick-up trucks such as the Toyota Hilux Vigo and Isuzu D-Max are their best sellers that makes sense to expand the market. These vehicles have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, good is they are mostly tough and building them does not require a fortune but they suffer poor riding dynamics since they have pick-up truck genes. Vehicles competing in this segment currently include the Toyota Fortuner (Hilux based), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (platform derived from the Strada), Chevrolet Trailblazer (shares its platform with the Colorado), Ford Everest (Ranger derived), and the Isuzu MU-X (D-Max based).

Year 2002 saw the launch of the D-Max pick-up in Thailand that replaced the TF line (including our Fuego, locally) but the MU-7 didn't had it launch until November 2004. It was basically a D-Max in body but the rear area was covered and this got a revised suspension system that suited for carrying passengers than cargo. In Thailand, it replaced the Wizard SUV, also based from the predecessor of the 'Max. Although its pick-up cousin was treated to a redesign in 2011, the MU had a new body two years later with a name change to MU-X.

Before, the Trooper was the sole SUV offering of Isuzu Philippines until various problems with the injectors had the Alterra (its local name) replacing it which had the Everest and Fortuner to compete with back then. It bowed out in September 2014 with the MU-X, a more competent vehicle, was released. During its selling time, a sole 4x2 and 4x4 models were available until they were renamed as the Urban Cruiser in 2011 and Urban Cruiser X in 2012 with a less optioned Zen added in 2009.

Value and Costs
With the MU-X having its debut recently, expect Alterra prices to be in the same level of popular competitors. Prices range from P550,000 for the early models to P1,100,000 for 2013 models. As a general rule, January 2012 and later purchased units have a remainder of their warranty so have a lookout for those. 4WD option was added to the range in December 2005 but only paired with an automatic.

Thanks to its brand reputation, maintenance costs are similar or sometimes lower than rivals that's when you take care of the vehicle meticulously. Using the right fuels and regular changing of oil and filters will free the car from black smoke from the tailpipe.

Exterior and Interior
If you tell that the front resembles the D-Max, then you're correct. For some who can't say the resemblance to the pick-up truck, then just think of this: the rear bed is replaced by a roof, rear door, and third row seats are added. With a length of 4,950mm, it is significantly longer than the Fortuner and the 2008 Montero Sport. The sleek lines complement the long body but you may say that it resembles a funeral hearse (oops, November 1 had passed by). Urban Cruiser models get front and rear chin while side step boards are standard for all.

One of the selling points of this vehicle back then is a standard entertainment system in the form of a DVD player (depending on the year which may be either a single din radio or a touch screen one), two headrest monitors, 5.1 surround system, and a detachable subwoofer. Entertainment system aside, passengers can expect decent space inside but the second row's middle seat is too tight plus interior quality is acceptable and not on the cheap side.

Engine
A common trait among PPVs is that engine options are the same with their pick-up truck brethren, and the Alterra does not break the tradition with the 4JJ1 3.0 - shared with the D-Max - having 144hp at 3,800rpm and 294Nm with a torque range between 1,400-3,400rpm. On paper, power figures are conservative but drive it and you'll see effortless driving to 100kph but go beyond it and it shows its limitations. On the other hand, the low torque range can give you high fuel economy figures. As always, expect some engine clatter since this reminds you that you're driving a diesel.

Driving Impressions
Since this is an SUV based on a truck, so don't expect sports car handling plus maneuvering this can be hard no thanks to its long size. The suspension settings are tuned for comfort, so driving this one at high speeds or road ruts then it begins to bounce out. If you prefer a wallowy ride similar to some American cars, this is it.

Verdict
If you need a cheap SUV which has a diesel engine, then put the Alterra on your list. Some traits like a hard to maneuver vehicle and a bouncy ride may put others off, but then you can live with those compromises.

The Good:

  • Fuel friendly
  • Low maintenance costs
  • Standard entertainment system
The Bad:
  • Diesel noise
  • Truck like ride
  • Numb steering
The Pick: 3.0

Used Car Review - Volkswagen Touareg (2004-2006)

Before leaving October, Myk Belmonte investigates this SUV if its worth the buy.

2004-2006 Volkswagen Touareg

History
Volkswagens are used to be popular in the game of sedans (Jetta, Passat), hatchbacks (Beetle, Golf), and somewhat MPVs and vans (Sharan, Caravelle). With the popularity of sport utility vehicles during the early 2000s, Volkswagen has no choice but to enter since all the profits are in that category.

Bet you didn't know that the Touareg is developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, which shares the same platform but differs in equipment, styling, and technical items. Since the three vehicles are designed with off-roading and sports car handling in mind, they were technically the first SUV offerings of the three German brands. The 7L Touareg was first offered in 2002 and produced until 2010.

Auto Prominence, Volkswagen's local distributor before, shipped in this SUV in April 2004 with the V6 guise arriving first and the V8 being available in October. In terms of price, it competed against its European stalwarts, as well with some high end Japanese and American SUVs. The higher engine was dropped in July 2005 and the vehicle sometime in 2006, with the Touareg nameplate resurfacing seven years later as a second generation model.

Value and Costs
In other countries, this vehicle is marketed as a high end vehicle as opposed to other Volkswagens being mass market ones and this approach is also done here before. Price started at P4.2M for the V6 (an additional P200,000 for units with an air suspension) and the V8 costing P5M, which was rather expensive for something that is viewed as a people's car. Because of this, only a few Touaregs of this generation were sold which meant less supply in the used car market. Another source to look out are second hand imports but they aren't that popular, too.

Since this is a vehicle which didn't sell well, expect limited availability of parts (although the new distributor of Volkswagen may accept servicing of old units) against BMW and Mercedes Benz. Do not expect levels of diesel SUV maintenance, especially when going with the monstrous V8.

Exterior and Interior
Unlike the Cayenne which has a love it or hate it design, the Touareg sports a more simpler design which is controversial free than the more luxurious cousin. Although at some angles it may look bulky, it manages to hold itself.

Its large dimension outside translates to a roomy cabin for five in comfort (no third row option available, that's relegated to the Q7 whose extended wheelbase is meant for that) despite sporting a less roomy cabin than other rivals. Inside, a high quality interior with wood panels treats the occupants with the 4WD knob located below the transmission knob.

Engine
A 3.2 V6 (which came standard among 2002-2004 Touaregs) having 217hp and a 306hp 4.2 V8 were the engine options back in the day. The V6 is refined and decent enough for everyone while the V8 gains more power. We recommend going with the lesser one unless you prefer more expenses (which we assume so).

Driving Impressions
Even though it may look large outside, this SUV has driving manners which are civilized on the cemented road and does amazingly well when the rough gets going. Driving this one on-road will reward you a smooth and comfortable drive especially it was tuned that way, as opposed to the Cayenne's sporty handling.

Verdict
With Volkswagen producing an SUV is like a popular celebrity vying for a position in the elections and winning, but the German brand was successful in placing itself in the SUV race. The Touareg may be rare but it is one bargain if you are willing to compromise yourself with several issues.

The Good:

  • Smooth on the road
  • Great off-road
  • Comfortable to be in
The Bad:
  • Heavy
  • Somewhat less space at the back
  • Expensive maintenance costs
The Pick: 3.2 V6

THE SPECS
Engines: 3.2 V6 and 4.2 V8
Power: 217hp (V6), 306hp (V8)
Torque: Data Not Avaulable
Fuel Consumption: 4-7km/L (city), 7-10km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Suspension: Front double wishbone, rear multi-link (with air suspension for V6)

Used Car Review - Chevrolet Zafira (2000-2005)

American in name, German in heart. Myk Belmonte explores this mini MPV's charm.

2000-2005 Chevrolet Zafira

History
We all know that General Motors is a large car company who owns different brands around the world. And the General practices one thing done in the automotive industry: using one car and selling them under different brands whether in the US or anywhere in the world. From sub-compacts to vans to sport utility vehicles, GM did it.

One of the vehicles which was a product of badge engineering is the Opel Zafira MPV, which used to be sold under Vauxhall (UK and Ireland), Holden (Australia and New Zeland), Chevrolet (other places except North America), and Subaru (Japan only) badges. The first generation Zafira was developed together with Porsche and used the Astra platform had its concept debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1997 with production started two years later. Although worldwide production ended in 2005 with the second generation model (called as the B) replacing it, Brazil produces this until 2012.

Sometime in 2000, the Zafira was first brought in together with the Cassia which was a refreshing sight against GM's offerings of gas guzzling SUVs and vans. While the market was flooded with MPVs of various sizes, the Zafira wasn't a hit since it had a stratospheric price of P1.2M back then but it was relaunched in 2003 with a price tag worth P995,000. No thanks to a small size and engine, it was discontinued in 2005.

Value and Costs
Zafiras aren't sought after in the used car market, which means that these can be picked up for low sums than rivals of the same age. If you want one, better be quick on finding since it was never a spectacular seller when it was available.

Prepare to shell more for maintenance but that's when you know where to source them. It may be a Chevrolet on its name, this one has Opel Astra underpinnings which means parts sourcing may be difficult. So apart from basic checking, do inspect if the spare tire is underneath the car which is placed there.

Exterior and Interior
Being 4,317mm long, the Zafira is basically shorter than the Toyota Revo or Mitsubishi Adventure but don't let the exterior size fool you. Clean lines come standard with the vehicle, which may look like a hatchback but with a tall rear side. Roof rails do come standard for all models.

Thanks to an invention called the "Flex 7", placing people inside is a breeze and can be customized for your own needs whenever you need it. The concept goes like this: the middle bench reclines, slides, and folds while the third row can be folded away when more space is needed. While the seating system is flexible, placing large people at the back isn't advisable, same with putting the car to the brim.

Engine
Thankfully, a 1.8 motor having 125hp and 170Nm was fitted among locally sold Zafiras and this presents a balance of power and economy. Overseas, there exists a weak 1.6 gasoline and other ones in the 2 liter range and diesel power plants.

Driving Impressions
Since this vehicle is based on the Opel Astra, expect to be a driver's delight since it does a car but with seven people inside. Basically, other MPVs sold later on copied the formula that the Zafira had left behind. If you want something car-like in terms of driving and comfort, then put this one on your list.

Verdict
Some vehicles which left a legacy but they weren't big hits due to several problems that had plagued them, and the Zafira was one of them. Back then, MPV's that were small and fun to drive aren't heard about; thanks to this, our market had lots of car-like driving people carriers.

The Good:

  • Noteworthy seat folding
  • Capacity for its size
  • Easy to drive
The Bad:
  • Too little an engine
  • Smallish size
  • Somewhat expensive maintenance
The Pick: 1.8

THE SPECS
Engine: 1,796cc Z18XE I4 gasoline
Power: 125hp @ 5,600rpm
Torque: 170Nm @ 3,800rpm
Fuel Consumption: 7-9km/L (city), 10-13km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Mazda 3 (2015-2014)

With all the eyes on the new model, Myk Belmonte assesses the second generation model that was a wallflower.

2015-2014 Mazda 3

History
The second time for a car is one crucial period, especially that period can bring numerous blessings to that car (sales success or recognition) or numerous mishaps and misfortunes which can further damage the brand and whatever surrounds it. Second hit successes that had gained sales recognition include the second generation CR-V and Accent while second hit misses include the Grand Vitara and X-Trail.

First launched to the world in 2009, the second generation Mazda 3 had its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show with American markets getting it first. The platform is still shared with the Ford Focus and Volvo S40, but this one got larger than the previous model. You might not know this: development started in 2004, the year that the original model was introduced. Production ended in May 2013, with the third generation model being sold months later.

Our market got was the facelifted model, which was made available in 2012 in other overseas nations. The second generation Mazda 3 was one of the last (the distinction is held by the BT-50) Mazdas being handled by Ford Group Philippines before Berjaya Auto Philippines took responsibility in 2013. From launch, two 1.6 models (a hatchback and a sedan) were available and a less optioned Maxx model was added.

Value and Costs
When it was first launched, the base price started at P999,000 for a rather basic 1.6 sedan. Whether you call it "intentional" or not, this caused sales to be lower than the previous model which was a sales success. Due to this reason, only a handful second generation 3s can be spotted for sale which can be picked up for between P700,000-P850,000.

Since parts are similar with the first generation model, they can be used and mainlining one won't necessitate the need to skip meals. Units bought from January 2013 carry Berjaya's Youjin3 Program which gets free PMS for three years, or the equivalent of the warranty automakers usually offer for their vehicles.

Exterior and Interior
More curves and a halloween ready front grille are standard amenities of the exterior deisgn. From the looks of it, it gained more length, width, and height than the previous model. Try to look closer, notice that there is some resemblance to the first generation 3, only it was stretched to look bigger. Do take note Maxx models don't carry fog lamps as a standard option while a sun roof can be had with the hatchback and the 2.0 model.

Owners of the 2008-2013 Mazda 6 would feel loyal inside, since the interior materials and dashboard layout resemble its big brother. Quality of materials are on the high side, a good strength plus it uses a black finish inside that complements its sporty nature. Bad news: despite the extended dimensions given, space is not a suit since it is tight back there.

Engine
Basically, the 1.6 having 103hp and 144Nm and the 2.0 carrying 145hp and 182Nm from the MZR engine family are carryovers from the previous model. Same story goes with the antiquated 4-speed automatic, since rivals make do with 5 speeds during that time. Rounding up the engines, the 1.6 loves to be pushed hard but is one fun partner while the 2.0 that is paired to a 5-speed automatic is smooth but needs to be revved above 2,000rpm to show its potential.

Driving Impressions
Despite the mechanical settings being similar to the previous model, the fun to drive personality remains which the 3 was known for. It may be a delight for the driver but passengers wouldn't be happy since a harsh ride greets them throughout.

Verdict
While this one didn't sell well because of its stratospheric prices (which we repeat that it may be debatable), the Mazda 3 still carries the basic formula which made it a success.

The Good:
  • A perky handler
  • Fun to drive
  • Feature loaded 2.0
The Bad:
  • Tight rear seat
  • Grille design not for all
  • 1.6 engine is overtaxed
The Pick: 1.6

THE SPECS:
Engines: 1,598cc and 1,999cc MZR I4 gasoline
Power: 103hp @ 6,000rpm (1.6), 145hp @ 5,000rpm (2.0)
Torque: 144Nm @ 4,000rpm (1.6), 182Nm @ 4,500rpm (2.0)
Fuel Consumption: 7-9km/L (city), 8-11km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Nissan Teana (2010-2014)

This week, Myk Belmonte gives you a comfortable car that can be yours for less.

2010-2014 Nissan Teana

History
We all know that Nissan was a choice among executives nearly 10 years ago or so. The magic of Nissan's cold air-con and the roomy cabin of the Cefiro isn't anymore a proposition that back-seat riding people take, since Camrys and Accords had taken the helm that Nissan used to dominate. With rising incomes, the upper echelons now line-up for BMW 5 Series and Benz E Class saloons to take them anywhere they wish.

Under the J32 platform code, the second generation Teana debuted in several ASEAN markets (like Thailand, where this one is aplenty) in 2008 under the Teana (other countries used the Cefiro badge) or Maxima - for consumers land down under - nameplates. The platform being utilized is also shared with the Murano and several Renault vehicles sold in France. Although being marketed in some nations, it is succeeded by the L33 Altima (and being renamed as such).

In the RP context, however, Nissan Motor Philippines Inc. is notoriously known to bring world acclaimed cars too late to the market, like three to five years past their selling date. The J32 Teana arrived in late 2010 with two engine options and more plush. In March 2014, alongside a transition to a united Nissan, the L33 Altima was brought here. One can get the 250XL and 350XV models when it was new.

Value and Costs
Since a new Altima was introduced (or brought up to the grave), second hand Teana prices may fall down a bit but not to an extent it will fall below the million peso range. As a golden rule regarding late model vehicles, get the newest model you can in which the remainder of the warranty can be used.

Bad news? With this car being a low volume model, replacement parts are very limited so better be careful on driving. Also, with this car sporting a V6 engine expect high gas bills but if you can afford this type of car you should not be complaining.

Exterior and Interior
Large as it is, you wouldn't mind especially it provides the luxury that Nissans in the premium category give. So let the exterior speak for itself. One feature present in the 350XV is the panoramic glass ceiling which gives an airy feeling for the occupants.

The highlight, of course, goes to the cabin. The beige interior is nice to see but touching it with dirty hands is an eye sore plus a pain to clean. Of course, there's the wood paneling and the seating may be less for some, but with some magic strings they've done a way.

Engine
Unlike the predecessor, this generation offered two V6 engines which may suit both personalities. The basic is a 2.5 V6 having 182hp and 232Nm that may be lacking for some but you wouldn't mind it anyways. Our recommended engine is the 3.5 V6 with 248hp and 335Nm being shared with the 350z and Murano but tuned in a different way.

Driving Impressions
One great feature of this sedan is the Xtronic CVT that is up to the task of keeping the car in the right gear whether you have a feather foot or a speed devil, there's an appropriate speed for you. Handling is fine but the suspension system isn't great on isolating road imperfections towards the cabin, but then you wouldn't be complaining about it.

Verdict
There's no doubt the Teana is one fine vehicle, with the luxurious feeling that one can get without costing your arm and a kidney stone for a Benz. However, you may want to live with some imperfections that you'll encounter, so decide wisely.

  • Comfortable
  • Smooth ride

Used Car Review - Honda City (2009-2014)

Can't afford the new model? Myk Belmonte let's you drool with this vehicle while you earn.

2009-2014 Honda City

History
Who wouldn't knew that one day, sub-compact cars grew in exterior size that rivals their older siblings in terms of interior space 15 to 20 years ago. So the Corolla Big Body and Civic EK we used to have rivals the 15 to 20 year old Corona and Accord respectively, with the former two having larger engines. Time flies so fast, my friend.

Unveiled in September 2008 in Bangkok, the fifth generation City (the third generation offered in the Philippines) was offered in a multitude of engine and transmission options, depending on the market conditions. And for the first time, it is assembled in Argentina and Brazil which meant that it has broader ambitions to boot.

The first month of the year 2009 had everyone surprised with the third generation model being launched locally, especially it was leaps and bounds of the model it replaced. No more iDSi engines and a rear folding bench (except it was only exclusively available for a certain variant in 2013), it was compensated with VTEC technology and a larger cabin. Until 2011, available models include the 1.3 A (discontinued in the 2012 update), 1.3 S, and the 1.5 E. In April 2013, two spin-off models of the 1.5 E namely the 1.5 EL and 1.5 ENC were made available.

Value and Costs
For just between P400,000 to P600,000, one can get a late model unit without the effects of first year depreciation associated with a brand new car. Prices are slightly higher than the competition, due to its "premium" status.

Unlike the previous generation model, there is no CVT transmission present which means less worries. Maintenance costs are similar to its contemporaries, which is a good thing.

Exterior and Interior
Stare at it, and you'll say that it is taller and larger than the model it replaced but the good news is, the inside proves it. To distinguish the A from its higher siblings, it carries steel wheels unlike the alloys of the upper echelon.

Huge expanses of interior space reserved for both humans and cargoes greets everyone. Do remember that the integrated audio system is not available in the 1.3 A, but all units have top notch quality and that premium feeling interior that is somewhat neglected in this category. The 2013 update brought the 1.5 EL having leather seats while the 1.5 ENC carries a 60/40 split bench, ISOFIX child seat, stability control, and a seatbelt reminder for both driver and passenger.

Engines
As the drill in the sub-compact sedan category, there are two engine options to serve both sides of the spectrum. The first (and probably the most common one) option is the L13A 1,339cc having 100hp at 6,000rpm and 127Nm at 4,800rpm but carrying VTEC technology as opposed to its predecessor of the same size. Going for this gives you the necessity to rev hard to attain decent acceleration, compared to the Toyota Vios of the same engine size. Our pick would be the L15A7i 1,496cc with 120hp at 6,600rpm and 145Nm at 4,800rpm that can only be paired with an automatic transmission. The 1.5 is at ease to motivate the car without any worries.

Driving Impressions
Being behind the wheel of a third generation City is a pleasurable experience, with expanse and unobstructed view outside plus it is a comfortable vehicle to be in, thanks to the large space. Handling is fine enough for a Honda.

Verdict
It had been months since a new City was released, and the previous generation model was one fine car especially it didn't fell to the pit of mediocrity. If you have no money for a new City, you can console yourself for the meantime with this one.

The Good:
  • Spacious
  • Plenty of features
  • Reliable
The Bad:
  • 1.3 engine needs to be revved
  • Not that flexible
  • No base models
The Pick: 1.5 E

THE SPECS
Engines: 1,339cc L13A i-VTEC and 1,496cc L15A7 i-VTEC I4 gasoline
Power: 100hp @ 6,000rpm (1.3), 120hp @ 6,600rpm (1.5)
Torque: 127Nm @ 4,800rpm (1.3), 145Nm @ 4,800rpm (1.5)
Fuel Consumption: 9-12km/L (city), 10-14km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Chevrolet Suburban (2000-2007)

Desiring a large American SUV is easy when you follow Myk Belmonte's advice on it.

2000-2007 Chevrolet Suburban

History
Bet you didn't know that the Suburban nameplate was used in 1933 as a station wagon built on a truck frame until it evolve as the SUV it was known today. Twelve generations later, it gained powerful engines, more space, and a luxurious offspring in the form of the Cadillac Escalade. No other car manufacturer can use the "Suburban" name as General Motors was awarded an exclusive trademark in 1988 and it outlasted vehicles like the Jeep Wagoneer, Ford Excursion, and some other rivals that had gone to heaven.

Let us discuss here the tenth generation model known as the GMT800 that was made available in late 1999 as a 2000 model. One can order this generation of Suburban in 1/2 ton 1500 and 3/4 ton 2500 under the nameplates of Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade ESV (themselves being longer versions of the Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade SUVs respectively). While it gained a larger 8.1 V8 engine, there is no more diesel engine and manual transmission available. After a six year run, the Suburban and its related cousins were treated to a redesign in 2006 dubbed the GMT900.

December 2000 saw the Philippine introduction of the redesigned Suburban, the second generation model offered locally. One change that was done locally is the rear side facing seats, which makes local Suburbans 10 seater models to be tax exempt and it you can have one in 2WD guise. It was sold until 2007 where the next generation model was launched in August of that year.

Value and Costs
Typical with American SUVs, resale prices aren't known to be stellar especially you can buy one for as low as P480,000 for an older unit. There is a reason for such but if you have the money to begin with, you wouldn't complain.

There is no diesel engine, so fuel consumption will affect your savings. Maintenance costs would be similar to the Ford Expedition of the same period. Since this is a bulky SUV, check out the electricals present which may affect the vehicle's performance.

Exterior and Interior
Staring at the Suburban will give you one impression: it is huge. The huge exterior gives you an expansive space inside which we will tackle on the next paragraph. It is imposing at best, given its size. Do take note that pre-2003 models have polished aluminum wheels while later ones have cast aluminum ones.

This is one car that you can transform to a hotel room whenever you want it, since space inside is very very big. You can tag along 8 to 10 (driver included) of your friends for a ride inside, since they have adequate room inside. The first row can accommodate three people thanks to a bench seat, while the last row can accommodate four people facing sidewards that is not comfortable to begin with or two people upfront in comfort. If you encounter a 10 seater model, we suggest you to skip that if possible. A niggle common among American vehicles are their sub par interior quality.

Engine
From the Vortec engine family comes a 5,328cc V8 carrying 285hp at 5,200rpm and 449Nm at 4,000rpm that motivates the Suburban. It has the power when you need it at the expense of fuel consumption.

Driving Impressions
Even though it is large outside, it is easy to drive especially with some little practice. Those with senior members of the family wouldn't appreciate the high step in height, but they'll love the smooth buttery ride that the Suburban provides.

Verdict
If you can afford one at the first place, then the Suburban is one good candidate for a large SUV given it's price. However, we mere mortals would rather be practical and go for something smaller and has a diesel engine. The choice is yours, my friend.
The Good:
  • Lots of space
  • Lots of power
  • Lots of presence
The Bad:
  • Fuel thirsty
  • Interior trim isn't great
  • AUV like rear seats are cramped
The Pick: LS with 8 seats

THE SPECS
Engine: 5,328cc Vortec V8 gasoline
Power: 285hp @ 5,200rpm
Torque: 449Nm @ 4,000rpm
Fuel Consumption: 3-5km/L (city), 7-9km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Toyota Hilux (1998-2004)

Before buying this pick-up truck, Myk Belmonte spills out the details.

1998-2004 Toyota Hilux

History
Pick-up trucks are known to be indestructible, especially that they can hack the worst things which may happen. We know the Hilux being destructed several times by Jeremy Clarkson and his gang at Top Gear and it became an instrument on disposing Libyan dictator Muhammar Gaddafi out of Chad in 1987.

First made available in 1997, the sixth generation Hilux can be had in regular, extended, and crew cab flavors with this generation being the basis of the 4Runner/Hilux Surf SUVs (the last of it to based upon) and the Thailand exclusive Hilux Sport Rider which the Fortuner replaced it. Except for North America, it was sold internationally and interestingly enough, the last generation of Hilux to be sold or produced in its hometown market of Japan.

While it was a product of durability, the Hilux name isn't a popular choice among consumers back then preferring those trucks from Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and even Ford. It remained in Toyota's line-up until 2004, with the seventh generation model (third in our shores) introduced in December of that year which became a market success. Variants available include the DLX in both 4x2 and 4x4 versions, XS 4x2, and SR5 4x4. A J variant which adds leather seats, spray-on bed liner, and window visors can be added in the SR5 and XS.

Value and Costs
As with Japanese pick-up trucks sold during the early 00s, prices of Hiluxes can range between P370,000 to P480,000.

Since there is no CRDi technology present here, maintenance costs would be on the low side. But then, it would be prudent to check if the tail pipe emits black smoke.

Exterior and Interior
Unlike other trucks of today which has some funny lines, the Hilux has clean and straight ones which produces a handsome profile. Non-DLX models get body stickers and alloy wheels while 4x4 models have side step boards as standard equipment.

The interior can be described as basic, but it is functional at the long run with the type of plastics being used are of the durable type. Except for the base DLX 4x2, all models come with complete power amenities.

Engine
Both the 2L 2,446cc having 83hp at 4,200rpm and 162Nm at 2,400rpm and the 3L 2,779cc carrying 88hp at 4,000rpm and 185Nm at 2,400rpm from Toyota's L engine family aren't exactly known for their miraculous pulling power or top levels of refinement, especially with the 4x4 system being activated. There are hubs and knobs for the usual off-road jaunts standard in the upper models. While it can pull you adequately, this is no sports car.

Driving Impressions
If you wish a smooth ride, you have read the wrong article especially the suspension is meant to be for hauling and not for comfort, good thing it wouldn't give up on you. Driving dynamics aren't also similar to a sedan, so do not expect too much.

Verdict
Planning to buy a truck which can hack the bushes without breaking anything down? Then this second generation Hilux is for you. However, if you really want a truck for personal usage then we suggest that you head to its competition.
The Good:
  • Can hack the worst situations
  • Reliable
  • Simplistic engines
The Bad:
  • Unrefined
  • Crude interior
  • Basic as it gets
The Pick: XS 4x2

THE SPECS
Engines: 2,446cc 2L and 2,779cc 3L I4 diesel
Power: 83hp @ 4,200rpm (2.4), 88hp @ 4,000rpm (2.8)
Torque: 162Nm @ 2,400rpm (2.4), 185Nm @ 2,400rpm (2.8)
Fuel Consumption: 6-8km/L (city), 10-13km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Land Rover Defender (1997-Current)

This iconic off-road machine can be attainable. Let Myk Belmonte lead you.

1997-Current Land Rover Defender

History
Land Rovers are usually associated with SUVs that will make everyone stare at you. They are off-road capable vehicles that have luxury amenities to pamper its occupants with. However, the Defender is an antithesis, since it is devoid of luxury amenities associated with Land Rovers.

First launched in 1983, the Defender was initially available in wheelbases worth 90 and 110 inches (it was named as such, without the Defender) with a 127 inch variant followed. It was an evolution of the Series I model launched in 1948, in which the body style remained until today. What we are reviewing here is the model introduced in 1990 where it used the Defender name. Station wagon, pick-up, and hard top versions are available in 90, 110, and 130 inch wheelbases. Due to some safety regulations which would affect the vehicle, the Defender would end production by December 2015.

The Philippine market had the taste of the Defender in 1997 with the 110 five door and 90 pick-up truck made available. It nearly remained unchanged throughout shelf life, until a April 2009 update which had new engines and updated seating layout. 1997-2009 are sold as the SW while 2009 and later ones are designated as the XS.

Value and Costs
This is one of the vehicles that wouldn't depreciate heavily despite its age, with most second hand Defenders being priced above a million pesos. This can be attributed to its limited importation locally, plus its attributes that makes owners attached to their units makes it a gem in the market. There are limited units in the classified block so good luck on hunting one.

Unlike other Land Rover models, you needn't to worry anything about this model since this is one no-frills machine to begin with. A recall in 1998 involving the upgrade of the timing belt was issued plus one must check the vehicle thoroughly since a missing service record can affect its value. If there is any other issue to check at, it would be the air conditioning units which has the tendency to fail because of some faulty electrical wiring or leaks in the refrigerant lines.

Exterior and Interior
Timeless, this is one word to describe the exterior of the Defender since the design would even date the 1940s. While the body is formed of aluminum with steel frame, be wary when the body has corrosion and imperfections especially it will ruin the vehicle's charm.

It definitely goes basic inside especially that there are no power amenities for the pre-2009 models (save for steering), no sound insulation, and an all vinyl cabin. Leather seats became standard later on while all models gain a scratch resistant dashboard. The 90 pick-up can accommodate six people in a 2 front facing and 4 side facing layout while the 110 wagon can fit nine people with a layout similar to a current Mitsubishi Adventure with rear side facing seats. Updated models can only accommodate 4 (90 XS) and 7 (110 XS) with all of them facing front due to safety regulations in Europe. Oh, lest I forget the interior is designed to be hosed down but we wouldn't recommend it.

Engine
Two engines were made available locally, in which you might be encountering them on your search. The first one fitted among pre-2009 units is the 300Tdi 2,495cc with 111hp at 4,000rpm and 265Nm at 1,800rpm that can be described as simple, durable, and efficient. For later units, a Ford derived ZSD-424 2,402cc from the Duratorq engine family carrying 112hp at 3,500rpm and 360Nm at 2,000rpm offering you more pulling power when you need it.

Driving Impressions
Driving this one on its intended purpose, it will serve you better thanks to its low range mechanicals that will give aid you when things get rough. Drive this one on the pavement, then you'll complain that the ride is bouncy, refinement isn't a strong suit, plus steering is slow. If you plan to use it on muddy terrains most of the time, then this is it otherwise you'll be fine with rivals.

Verdict
If off-roading is your forte, then the Defender is the one to get since it can get to your destination without worries. Just make sure you can live with its poor on-road behavior and expensive prices. You have no right to complain, mind you.
The Good:
  • Best when the rough gets rough
  • Easy to maintain
  • Reliable
The Bad:
  • Definitely not the Land Rover you know
  • Crude at its best
  • Basic cabin
The Pick: 110 models

THE SPECS
Engines: 2,495cc 300Tdi (1997-2009) and 2,402cc ZSD-424 I4 diesel
Power: 111hp @ 4,000rpm (2.5), 122hp @ 3,500rpm (2.4)

Used Car Review - Dodge Durango (2000-2004)

Myk Belmonte explores this rather unnoticed 4x4 in the market.

2000-2004 Dodge Durango

History
Before the Philippine market got the pick-up truck based SUV fever just 10 years ago, the Yanks had theirs in the 70s to the 90s. Dodge was first in this trend with the Ramcharger based on the D Series/Ram pick-up trucks made available in 1974, Chevrolet's S-10 Blazer was based on its namesake S-10 pick-up truck first launched in 1983, and Ford's Bronco introduced in 1984 whose underpinnings were derived from the Ranger. The 90s era Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango are based from the Ranger and Dakota trucks respectively. The shift to crossovers plus the diminishing market for compact pick-up trucks had ended an era of these species in the US, except for the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe that are based on the Silverado.

Preceding the Ramcharger which was discontinued in 1993, the first generation Durango was first sold in 1998 only available in 4WD, with a 2WD option and a V6 engine followed suit the following year. Unlike the Blazer and Explorer, it did offer an optional third row seat which was an advantage especially larger SUVs like the Suburban and Expedition had them. While it was a popular pick, the end of its shelf life had refined SUVs entering to the scene, which necessitated a redesign for 2003.

The guys at Norkis Automotive Resources Corporation, who ditched Daewoo distribution in the early 2000s, launched the Durango in 2000. It was first available in 4WD with a 2WD version made available in October 2001. While the world has the second generation model available, Norkis sold them until 2004 with the following model being distributed by CATS Motors the following year.

Value and Costs
American SUVs aren't exactly known for their residual values, so expect to pick up a second hand Durango between P270,000-P450,000.

While parts availability may be limited due to the lack of support by Norkis, independent shops specializing Chryslers and American vehicles as a whole had spouted so be friends with them. Since this era of Chrysler vehicles aren't exactly known for their reliability, have a mechanic inspect the various parts so you'll have a worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Butch and brash, these are the words to describe the Durango's exterior. Although it may possess smaller dimensions as against the Expedition, it has imposing looks that will scare off other motorists. Park this one side by side with a 1997-2003 Dakota and you'll notice the similarities, which is because they share the same underpinnings.

Philippine market Durangos can accommodate 8 people, all front facing. The driver and the front passenger can move their legs, thanks to the automatic gear stick being situated behind the steering wheel. For those who wouldn't want to share seats upfront, the center console composed of two cupholders and some storage bins are present. While the gauges are big, radio and climate controls would require time to master as they are small.

Engine
In the US, there is an option for a sole V6 and two V8s, depending on the year model. In the local context, we do get the 4.7 V8 from the PowerTech engine family carrying 235hp at 4,800rpm and 379Nm at 3,200rpm which replaced the 5.2 Magnum V8 in the home market. Don't let the small displacement turn you off, it is more efficient than the engine it replaced plus it offers gobs of power from a wide range of power band.

Driving Impressions
Despite weighing 2,200kg and having a small V8 engine, the Durango can surpass the distance by providing safe steering but handling isn't a strength. Ride quality wouldn't be tops especially one must consider its truck based roots.

Verdict
If you prefer your SUV American and like your style brute, then a used Durango would suit your preference. However, do remember that there are shortcomings that you must accept during your ownership experience.
The Good:
  • Spacious cabin
  • Power
  • Rugged looks
The Bad:
  • Thirsty for fuel
  • Poor ride quality
  • Handling isn't the best
The Pick: 4.7 V8

THE SPECS
Engine: 4,698cc PowerTech V8 gasoline
Power: 235hp @ 4,800rpm
Torque: 379Nm @ 3,200rpm

Used Car Review - Daewoo Racer (1994-1998)

Before leaving the month of July, Myk Belmonte reviews this jalopy just for the heck of it.

1994-1998 Daewoo Racer

History
There are some car manufacturers who are willing to dispose their old body styles (with license, of course) so that other manufacturers can use it. Some Japanese manufacturers would lend their bodies of some cars to several Chinese manufacturers (those who would copy are a different manner) while in this case, Opel would donate some of their old cars to Daewoo to form their new cars. In fact, Opel donated the Kadett E who is going to be discontinued with some modifications by Daewoo and the end product is the LeMans.

First launched in 1986, the LeMans was sold under a variety of names including under those of Asuna, Pontiac, and Passport under a variety of engines and either available in sedan or hatchback. The nameplate ran for two generation models until it was replaced by the Daewoo Lanos in 1997. Some countries have the second generation model (Cielo/Nexia) still under production.

Locally, it was the first Daewoo badged vehicle to be sold under Transfarm and Co. Inc based in Cebu. While it had some success in its early years, the financial crisis crippled Quisimbing's distribution rights for the vehicles of the Korean company. Variants sold include the ETi and GTi with a TXi model aimed for taxi fleets launched in late 1994.

Value and Costs
If you are determined in buying one, then you'll jump for joy that prices range in the P30,000 to P60,000 price bracket. With that money, you can buy a brand new laptop, cellphone, a semester's worth in college, or a brand new motorcycle; but then think many times before committing to buy one.

When it comes to maintenance costs, there are parts specialists for old Korean vehicles that exists but overall finding them can be a huge headache. Old Korean vehicles aren't exactly known for their reliability, so better check the car overall before buying one.

Exterior and Interior
Laying your eyes upon one, you would say that this is not one of the most beautiful of them all. Some lines and blocks make this one somewhat outdated. Do take note that ETi and GTi models have a different trunk design from the TXi, plus the latter does not have any hubcap covers while the GTi can be ordered with alloy wheels though.

This budget car has tons of space for the passengers, which is a strength. Interior quality can be described as a hard plastic party but you do not have any right to complain about it. Some models have an analog clock which was added in 1996 while the GTi can be had with power windows, dangerously situated in the middle console.

Engine
While other engines of the same size had a carburetor system, the Racer's 1.5 engine carrying 89hp at 5,500rpm and 127Nm at 3,000rpm has a fuel injection system with throttle body injection that provides smooth acceleration but fuel consumption isn't good when it is not cleaned.

Driving Impressions
Ever since it was sold, technology and driving dynamics aren't the latest ones especially that one must consider it was based on a 1980s Opel. It provides a smooth acceleration but other than that, one must look elsewhere.

Verdict
If you really want this Daewoo, prepare to load yourself with tons of patience. However, there exists better cars if you are willing to shell out more money.

The Good:
  • It has the space
  • It ca be bought in the cheap
  • Did we say its cheap?
The Bad:
  • Iffy quality
  • Dangerous location for the power windows
  • Hard to find parts
The Pick: GTi

Used Car Review - Volvo C30 (2007-2013)

Myk Belmonte evaluates the recepie of this unique hatchback.

2007-2013 Volvo C30

History
Volvos are known to be utterly conservative vehicles that are aimed towards the senior demographic of the market. They are safe that they are fitted with tons of safety features but something that is definitely not associated with fun and funky. In the new millennium, they had numerous efforts on making their cars something to be worthy of consideration by the younger market.

It started life as the Volvo Safety Concept Car displayed at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show with production being planned in 2002 and it was made available as a production car in 2006 with the first units being sold in Europe. It shared the platform with the S40, V50, and C70 plus other Ford and Mazda vehicles sold internationally. To further tap the younger market, it had a premier in the Twilight Saga movies with Edward Cullen driving it. After calling it a day, Volvo discontinued the vehicle in 2013.

2007 saw the introduction of the C30 in the Philippine market which made this vehicle as the cheapest Swedish car (SAAB isn't here so, the distinction is there). Although this vehicle is technically discontinued, there are some stocks available locally.

Value and Costs
Thanks to the mighty power of depreciation, second hand C30s range between P750,000 to P1,200,000 for later units. As the drill, go with a pre-owned unit since it will give you a peace of mind.

Since this vehicle comes from the Continental side of the planet, expect maintenance costs to be slightly higher than those from the Land of the Rising Sun. There are no reliability issues, but it pays to check the vehicle thoroughly.

Exterior and Interior
With some bits of inspiration from the P1800ES and 480ES, the C30 looks sporty on paper thanks to its two door styling. We shall not delve on this one more since let us have the design speak for itself.

If you have kids, look elsewhere as the C30's interior isn't that much friendly especially the rear area isn't hospitable at all. Dealing with the other details, there is the floating dashboard that carries an easy to reach controls that are logically placed.

Engine
Throughout selling life, there had been three engines available. The original options were a B5244S4 2,435cc carrying 170hp at 6,000rpm and 230Nm at 4,400rpm and a turbocharged B5254T7 2,521cc displacing 230hp at 5,000rpm and 320Nm at 1,500-5,000rpm. In a March 2010 update, the bigger 2.4 I5 was dropped in exchange of the B4204S3 1,999cc with figures rated at 145hp at 6,000rpm and 185Nm at 4,500rpm. For the low run of the engine options, the 2.0 is enough for your needs while the 2.4 has more oomph and the turbocharged 2.5 is fast but pointless.

Driving Impressions
We have bad news here, as the C30 does not posses a sporty drive complementing its styling. At least this vehicle has some firm body roll but the ride is a somewhat firm. Steering this coupe slash hatchback is on the middle part. This is no sports car, mind you.

Verdict
This is a hybrid car in a sense it confuses people whether it is a coupe or a hatchback. A used C30 will give you a practical yet stylish hatchback but this is no sports car. If you are a fashion setter without any intentions of raising a family and not a sporty minded person, then go for a pre-owned C30.

The Good:
  • Unique looks
  • Made of high quality
  • Powerful turbocharged engine
The Bad:
  • Less practical
  • Less spacious
  • Not that fun to drive
The Pick: 2.0i

THE SPECS
Engines: 1,999cc B4204S3 I4, 2,435cc B5244S4, and 2,521cc B5254T7 turbocharged I5 gasoline
Power: 145hp @ 6,000rpm (2.0), 170hp @ 6,000rpm (2.4), 230hp @ 5,000rpm (2.5)
Torque: 185Nm @ 4,500rpm (2.0), 230Nm @ 4,400rpm (2.4), 320Nm @ 1,500-5,000rpm (2.5)
Fuel Consumption: 6-9km/L (city), 8-11km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Used Car Review - Toyota Yaris (2007-2014)

Myk Belmonte explores the magic of this unnoticed hatchback back then.

2007-2014 Toyota Yaris

History
The Yaris (or Echo for some folks) nameplate was first launched in 1999 in hatchback, sedan or coupe styles that is based from the Toyota Platz in which it replaced the long due Starlet. It had three generations using that name in which one can buy with a trunk or not in a variety of names worldwide.

Made available in 2005, the Yaris hatchback is designed in Europe while the sedan derivative (known as the Belta) was conceived in Japan. Both variants share drivetrain components and the frame but their sheet metal is different. Bet you didn't know that from 2011 until 2013, this vehicle was sold using the Daihatsu Charade badge in Europe, as it is the last vehicle bearing the Daihatsu badge since it was leaving that market in January 2013.

After the Echo's unfavorable run, the Yaris was launched in 2007 to compete in the intense rivalry of sub-compact hatchbacks sparked by the Honda Jazz. Although not a flop compared to its predecessor, it sold less than the main market leader. It hanged on to receive updates in June 2009 and March 2012 until a replacement model was introduced in April 2014.

Value and Costs
Since it has been three months after the launching of the new model, prices are flirting between the range of P300,000-P450,000. Best bet is to find a unit sold in September 2011 or later to take advantage of the remainder of the warranty.

This is a Toyota, so expect it to last longer than you will do. Parts are similar to the Vios despite this one being a limited quantity model. With most units that you might encounter being mostly used inside the city, checking them out rigorously for wear and tear parts is the key.

Exterior and Interior
Unlike the bulbous flanks of the Vios, the Yaris is more attractive to look at unlike competitors that are too pedestrian to look at. We shall let the design speak for itself, and oh, lest I forget, the updated models in June 2009 and March 2012 have different grilles, bumpers, headlamps, and one set of wheels for the remainder period.

Going inside, you will have a hint towards its design target: the youth and younger drivers. There are tons of storage bins inside, but the biggest flaw is the lack of flexibility especially it has a single folding rear bench that will do trouble when you need it. Another weakness is the small aircon controls and the gauges (situated at the center) and radio screen tend to wash out on extreme sunlight. Other than these gripes, occupants get comfortable seating inside.

Engine
While the Jazz carries two engines, the Yaris has only one to make you life easier in the form of a 1NZ-FE 1,497cc with figures of 107hp at 6,000rpm and 142Nm at 4,200rpm. You will like revving this engine unlike in its sedan sibling, it is willing and fun.

Driving Impressions
It has its own distinct personality, especially it is well planted around the twisties outside the city although the steering is light and sensitive. Its short length gives it a strength over maneuvering around town.

Verdict
While Toyotas are known to be dependable appliances, the Yaris has some qualities to get it going. If you can live without carrying passengers too much, then the Yaris is a good choice but the Jazz is the best overall.

The Good:
  • Easy to live with
  • Fun to drive
  • Funky character
The Bad:
  • Lacks the space
  • Only one variant
  • Only one engine
The Pick: 1.5, you have no choice

THE SPECS
Engine: 1,497cc 1NZ-FE I4 gasoline
Power: 107hp @ 6,000rpm
Torque: 142Nm @ 4,200rpm
Fuel Consumption: 9-12km/L (city), 11-14km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)
Transmission: 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic
Suspension: Front independent McPherson strut, rear rigid axle with torsion beam

Used Car Review - BMW 7 Series (2002-2009)

This July 7th, Myk Belmonte reviews a namesake car just for the heck of it.

2002-2009 BMW 7 Series

History
Whenever a car reaches a controversial point, it can mean a make or break status. Even before the car reaches production thanks to some photos that are leaked online, people would even rush to the dealers to buy the last examples of that beautifully styled predecessor. But, styling is just one part of the car.

BMW's E65 designation for the 7 Series had a fair share of drawbacks related to its exterior design and its fussy iDrive interface that some folks bought the old model to spare them from the two problems. It was first developed in 1996 and finalized in 2001, with a launch for the European market in November 2001. Unlike its predecessors, it had specific codes for each version which were: E65 for short wheelbase models, E66 for long wheelbase models, E67 for bulletproof versions, and E68 for the hydrogen propelled models. There is no M7 version, but it was consoled by the Alpina B7 sold between 2007 and 2008. It was replaced by the F01 7 Series in 2008.

Locally, the E65/E66 7 Series arrived in late 2002 to replace the overdue E38. It was the most expensive Bimmer that you can buy locally, with the top end model costing P15M back in 2008. A myriad of engines and models (which will be discussed further) were made available throughout the years.

Value and Costs
What was once prohibitively can be now yours for the price of a brand new car. Old but less engine displacement models linger in the P850,000-950,000 range while later ones are on the upper scale. There are numerous variants sold so further research is needed to determine the variant right for you. Short wheelbase models are only available between 2002 to 2003, which means majority of them are long wheelbase ones.

For the cheapskates in you, this is definitely not the car to buy if you have limited funds to begin with. Since this is has the iDrive, a trip to a BMW dealer to check things out before you buy is the most prudent option. Testing out each function such as the air suspension, air-conditioning, boot release mechanisms, and other electronic doodads is preferable.

Exterior and Interior
While some criticize the exterior design because of its boldness (which is prevalent in its early years), some praise its bold move to shed BMW's conservative image. Our beloved Chris Bangle gave his artistry when he was designing this, with some bits that had caused the controversy include the two-level rear styling with separate rear fenders and "bustle-back" boot lid that led to the term "Bangle Butt". A 2005 update made this vehicle more subtle and pleasing to the eyes.

Space, space, and more space, this is what the 7 Series in long wheelbase trim obliges you that plus the interior has tons of equipment that will please both driver and passenger. The iDrive system controls most of the vehicle's gadgets by rotating and clicking a silver button between the front seats and following the menus on the dash, which isn't user friendly to begin with. Apart from that, there are LCD monitors with TV and DVD function so that you can catch your favorite telenovela or flick while stuck in traffic.

Engine
A wide range of engines from the basic 3.0 inline six gasoline to a monstrous V12 engine. In total, there is one inline six, four V8s, one V12, and one diesel so it better pays to choose your engine well. They are willing to be revved but for all day usage, we suggest to stick with the 3.0 in either gas or diesel flavors. The V8s will make sense if you have the money while the V12 is best left behind.

Driving Impressions
Still, the driving joy of a BMW remains despite the hefty body. Steering is accurate and body lean is controlled without compromising comfort. As always, road imperfections do spoil the fun.

Verdict
As they say, beauty lies on the eyes of the beholder. What may be put down for its styling makes up for its balance of power and luxury.

The Good:
  • Well composed
  • Full of gadgets
  • Big inside
The Bad:
  • Clumsy iDrive
  • Styling not for everyone
  • Very very expensive maintenance costs
The Pick: 730d (if you can find one)
